Pardon the'witches'.

Some 300 years after the Witchcraft act was repealed, a campaign to pardon all those executed for 'witchcraft' has been launched in the Scottish parliament.
Persecution of those accused of witchcraft was particularly brutal in Scotland with several thousand (mainly women) being murdered.

I'm not sure how many witches there are in Scotland today, but I don't think they go around casting wicked spells on people. More likely they are keen to protect the environment and are knowledgeable about natural remedies.

I heard this on the radio last month... I don't see the point of the whole thing... I suppose a stroke of the pen could undo the fact they were called or accused of being witches.. but how can they 'pardon' witches .. if they were never witches in the first place...
i always found these stunts just a waste of time and money for governments regardless of what country it is.

Or when they're dead. Small comfort indeed. They were bad about witch hunting where I was born and raised in the U.S. In fact, we were probably the worst about it. 🤔

I guess the pardon would be for a crime they never committed and something they never were. I used to work with a practicing Pagen. She was nice to me. She didn't particularly get along with our direct boss who told people she was worried she put a "hex" on her. This got back to the Pagen lady who stated this woman doesn't get it, that's now how we are. People are still worried about this stuff today.

If anyone could cast spells that work, I'd be really surprised. As for pardoning witches, I guess that wouldn't matter to many people, unless they are descendants who care about that sort of thing.

..yes but my point being that why would you care ( wy would one, care).. if your great, great , great, great, granny was pardoned.. it makes no difference to your life today or your life in the future.. in fact you probably don't even know .... sad situation to know a long ago ancestor suffered that, but the pardoning of the 'witch' isn't going to make anything better today...

Maybe someone whose LOOKS for something/ anything to be offended by started that....

It is like mysteries solved or crimes solved from 50-60 years ago ... most who were waiting for answers are gone...
...had a cold case solved with DNA like 60 years later could not find family to care the news people tried to find neighbors or ANYONE to react

I've wondered if these "pardons" were more for present day tourism, than regret over killing innocent people, for spurious "religious" reasons. It adds to an area's mystique to have witches. But" here's where we burnt them, alive, at the stake," doesn't fit well on a tee shirt.

Not specifically the thread topic or location, but re: this post in general- consider how often there ARE relatives who get at least a small peace of mind from having the shadow of guilt taken off their long-ago loved ones.

The way things are today, if there are any relatives of a supposed witch,
who was executed, alive today and they know their history and family
tree and can prove, that they are the descendants of such a person, they
will be suing for compensation, such is the mindset, of most today I fear.

Historic injustice.

Mike.
