Today, a PSP Trooper was shot and killed while attempting to take charge of a suspicious man that was reported walking in the vicinity of the barracks in Juniata County. Facts are coming in slowly as the investigation is still ongoing. The suspect was also shot and killed.

I cannot provide a name or anything about the 2 dead men. A third victim, another PSP Trooper was shot and is being treated for his injury. His wound is survivable, or at least it is being reported that way at this time.

As we always ask, please keep your thoughts and any prayers you wish to extend to the families. I am relaying information in this post from a friend that is still an active duty Trooper..

Information as to the Trooper's name and family situation with spouse and minor children are slow coming in. Even the Troopers on duty don't know the name of the Trooper that was killed. I have to wait until I get more information to give you the rundown on benefits, but I can tell you there will be state, Federal and workers comp benefits, plus in addition to those benefits will be Union benefits that are paid out when a Trooper is killed while in the line of duty and then any additional insurance that he may have selected to contribute to out of his paycheck. If he has minor children, there is also educational benefits made available, so the children may attend college or trade school.

When I find out more, I will share it, but I can tell you that the benefit package is really nice, but that doesn't replace him as a husband, Dad, brother and friend. I did read in the Philadelphia Enquirer that the shooter engaged the police first.

The names and circumstances are out now. I was following the story because of the location and many responding PSP officers/cars went through here yesterday and I knew it was something bad.

I have found the Trooper's name,,, Jacques F. Rougeau Jr., however, I don't know if he was married or had any minor children, so I can't list all of his benefits, but regardless, the money and benefits will never replace the man himself. I am sure the family is suffering to get through this tragic situation and Trooper Rougeau's fellow Troopers, both male and female are also in mourning at this time. I have been on duty when a fellow Trooper was killed and I can tell you that the barracks becomes very still and quiet, but we go on and do the job we were hired to do and took a pledge to do or as we call it, "The Call To Honor."

The article stated that the suspect entered the barracks parking lot and with a high powered rifled shot the Troopers as they exited the building to go to their cars. (I digress: I wonder if Trooper Rougeau was the first to exit the building and never had a chance to remove his pistol from the holster?) The suspect is a true coward to shoot people while hidden behind a blind spot.

The Governor was at the hospital when the deceased and wounded Troopers arrived there. He has ordered the flags in PA to be lowered to half mast. A few weeks ago, a suspect while street racing attempted to run down 2 state Troopers. That case is under investigation. With these cases so close together, the Commander may have placed the Troopers on high alert.
