In Houston we have many areas that flood with every serious rain event. Tropical storm Beta has all but departed heading eastward now. So we see on the news the some of the hundreds of cars and trucks half to completely under water because the owners thought they could drive through. On Monday night a live broadcast followed three young women walking in the high water opening up to abandoned flooded cars and robbing them of the contents inside. Many of the cars have the windows down because they have to crawl out windows. Bad enough you lose your vehicle but thieves steal things left inside. A second incident showed a reporter talking to a little boy in a stranded flooded truck. He looked to be about four years old. The reporter asked who else was in the truck and he said no one. His mom and older brother had left to go????? The reported immediately cut off the broadcast. So here was this little boy alone in this truck half under water.
There is a good news story about a mother and her two children stuck in very high and rising water again because she thought her car could run under water. A young woman spotter her and hailed down a young man who then went to the car and pulled them out. They had to swim to shallow water. Soon all those folks are going to learn when you drive in to flooding water your insurance will not cover you.

Back in May, 2004 (Mother's Day) a young woman and her 4 y/o daughter were found dead early the following morning. Apparently, her car was washed off the road and into a swollen creek, which happened after a heavy rainstorm. I was summoned to the scene by the 911 operator. Another terrible day in the life of a cop.
