People never seem to amaze me.

Got new recliners so I listed the old ones on Craigslist for free. One person wanted just one. Nope. Another told me a sad story about her husbands surgery and they had no transportation so could I please deliver? Nope. Then there was a no show, promised to be here at 10:30. Never showed. Finally someone came to get them. I warned him I would not help as I’m 72. He seemed delighted with the chairs, so hooray!

I've been through similar situations when trying to give things away: can I hold it for two weeks? Um... see, I'm giving it away because I want it out of my house, which by the way, is not a freaking warehouse. :/

It takes some major moxie to ask for delivery on free furniture! 🙄

....and if they DO come to get it, even after you've stressed that it's big and heavy and you told them that you can't help them load it because you're old or injured or weak, they show up alone with a Toyota Corolla and want you to help them fit in in the trunk.

I was giving away a large antique oak pump organ and told everyone who called the exact dimensions and the estimated weight and that I could not help load because I had just had shoulder surgery and had my arm in a sling and two different people STILL showed up to pick it up in a car or a SUV. Without extra help. Of course they wanted me to hold it for them for a while so they could borrow their brother-in-law's pickup sometime in the next month or so. Uh, no.

Ugh.

I gave away free chickens and a chicken house once when we moved off a small farm. I advertised in the paper that it was first come, first served but several people still wanted me to hold everything til "next week" etc. I told them no, but after it was gone I got a few angry phone calls that I didn't hold it for them. (As a side note, I recommend that you never give out your work phone when giving something away. I must have gotten a hundred calls and the office manager was ... well, displeased to put it nicely.)

This happened to me too. Guy came to pick up a gas grill in this tiny compact car. Dude! He went away very unhappy.

It reminds me of my days as a teacher. Whenever we did a special project, I’d have to outline all the dos, don’ts, and consequences before we started. I actually specified in the ad that they would need a truck and a helper because the chairs are large. Common sense isn’t really all that common.

did you mean people never 'Cease' to amaze you ? :D

Speaking of giving stuff away, of course, not everyone is so fortunate, but today was a very wonderful day. The vehicles are a small Ford ranger (deceased) and an Ford F-350. The owner of the ranger was told by a former resident to keep the F-350 for free.

Having looked at it, I'd wager open used retail (4WD, new tires, locking hubs) it's got to be $5K range. Interior is clean, (camper is garbage) Now he's no longer having to borrow another's car.

This is one of the few things I have used facebook for. It has always worked for me, got rid of things quickly and easily.

I would think that would have some value. We have one, inherited, and spent about $800 getting it rebuilt so it works, so I hope they have value...

Unfortunately, they are the very devil to find a home for. I spoke to a guy in Georgia who has what he called a "pump organ orphanage" and he said he had 131 of them in his barn and couldn't even give them away, much less sell them.

Mine was inherited, 135 years old, and in good shape. Very pretty, too.
