Pete Rose Forgiven. Maybe

I heard that the President has pardoned Pete Rose. Anyone else hear that?

I don't know if this is accurate or not, but don't you have to be convicted of a crime in order to be pardoned?
Evidently not. The former president gave preemptive pardons to his family, Fauci and Milley. Only the Supreme Court could decide if it’s legal to give someone a pardon before they were convicted of a felony. If your found guilty of a misdemeanor, you would have to apply to the governor of your state.

I don't see the point of a pardon. He served his time, paid a fine, and paid back all that he owed with intrest. Plus the Dude's dead. So what does it accomplish? I guess it's supposed to help get him into Hall of fame. But I don't think it's the tax cheating that has kept him out. It was the betting.

BINGO!(y)

It so bothers me that he isn't in the BB Hall of Fame bc of the betting. (I didn't know about the tax evasion). So many other fantastic players also bc of steroids--uh, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, just the best batter and pitcher of all time (except I guess for the Babe).

Yea, but that opens up the can of worms of PEDs. What Rose did didn't give him an advantage on the field, over other players.

It's apples and oranges.

If it was just the tax cheating I'd say let him in the Hall of Fame. But no one who is in a position to affect the outcome of a sporting event should be allowed to bet on it. I don't care which way they bet. Based on that I approve of him being banned from it. Of course me being a Dodger fan who always hated their arch rivals Cincinati, may have something to do with it.

Well, rules are rules. So if no betting is allowed (presumably stemming from the 1919
"Black Sox" scandal in fixing the World Series), then Rose ran afoul of the rules.

However he only bet on his own team to win, so to my thinking that's not nearly as bad as if he were betting on the other team, for obvious reasons. Rose was one of the greatest all time baseball players, and he ought to be in the HOF.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there was a helluva rivalry with the Pirates and Reds in those days. Every time the Reds came to Pittsburgh, we were scared of Pete Rose because he was so damn good!

Simple version. The commissioner said since their lives are over so are their life time bans.

Both voluntarily dealt with criminals no matter how small time or harmless they may seem. One actually fixed the game and other as a coach might have had his criminal dealing influence his on field decision even if indirectly.

On field as a player with his game exploits yes Rose deserves to be considered. As coach that's in question since his known gambling was as a coach.

It all started when the Dodgers left Brooklyn. Baseball has been on a downhill slide ever since. Now it's just a bunch of overpaid prima donnas jacked up on steroids.

IMO it’s ok to applaud Pete Rose’s accomplishments and note his failures.

Every human has flaws and imperfections that shouldn’t detract from their achievements.
