Phoney Phone Calls - Social Security

I have so far today received three phone calls from three different phone numbers saying that my SS number is being sued/closed/shut down and that the State of Texas was coming after me. This was said in a way that would very much scare someone that wasn't aware of the scams going on out in the world or an older person that doesn't know about the way these things work. The phone numbers that they came from are all in Texas. I called the SS office and verified that there is no compromise on my account and everything is in order. They took the first phone number but since then I have received two more different ones. The phone numbers are : 281 400-1893, 415 808-6101, 915 228-3763, and possibly 940 333-1004. The last one I didn't get to answer, but they are all from Texas. Please let others know and beware!!!

Since my original post I have received another call from phone number 281 899-0361.

craftynana,
You should stop answering the calls, and NEVER engage in discussion with them. These scams are common, and I wouldn't bother wasting time keeping track of the phone numbers.

It's good you are aware that these are scammers and have shared this with others. A friend of mine (we're in Jersey) got a similar call and they said they were coming to the house to arrest him or some sh*t like that. He told them "I'll see you when you get here" probably in his best curmudgeonly voice and hung up. I would have love to seen the person's face.

I get those at least once a week. Also the "Donation" calls - Police officers killed, war veterans, heart, cancer, etc. The hint that's it's one of those calls: When you say, "Hello," there is a pause before someone answers. That's because they're using a computerized phone system that can call several numbers at the same time & when you (or your answering machine) picks up, the caller has to figure out which of the many calls were answered. As soon as 2 seconds go by with no one answering, I hang up.

Another hint: Sometimes you can hear other people talking in the background...one of those "boiler rooms" with 20-30 people scamming.

I do not answer calls when I don't recognize the number.

I tried not answering when I didn't recognize the number and missed many phone calls from doctors calling from unknown numbers, so I stopped doing that. It's not a bad practice for most, but I have too many doctors/specialists calling and can't do that.

I kept track of the numbers to turn them over to the SS Administration when I called to make sure my account was ok. Talk with them...NEVER...most of the time it is a recording anyway. As far as not answering them...there are too many doctor calls that I get calling from different offices so I never know if it is one of them.

Make sure if the calls are coming to your cell phone that you take the time to block them, that's what I do. Eventually all their numbers are blocked and you don't get them anymore.

No way to block "all their numbers." You can block thousands, millions, but the scammers simply come up with another number with another area code.

Lol, treeguy64, you are right. I can't block millions of phone calls, but I don't get millions of them. I get a few. I can only block the few phone calls that are to me, and I do. Yes, the number changes and when it does I block that one as well. I no longer get solar call. I used to get 10 or more a week.

It's cuts down on the phone calls I get substantially. I will acutally go 7 days in a row sometimes and not get one. Works for me. Everyone has to do what's works for them. I don't press my ideals on you or a anyone else.

I'd like to know where they get our phone numbers from. I am ex-directory which should mean I only get calls from those I personally give the number to. Certainly some of the calls are from BT employees. They know personal details only one of their employees would have access to.

On my cell phone there is a feature called do not disturb.

If I turn that on the only people that can get through are those on my contact list.

I usually do not answer any numbers I don't recognize. But today I answered one I thought I knew and it was a last call that I was an immigrant and they were coming to get me. I just said come get me and hung up. Back to not answering any number not fully recognized.
