Pickle time!

My garden is doing well. I made refrigerator Garlic Dills and Bread and Butter pickles today. Years ago I had a crock for my pickles and canned them also. These days I make the refrigerator kind that have to be eaten within a few weeks. It makes a lot but I give some to friends and family. It takes a lot of salt for the brine but I have to have my pickles.pickles.JPG

I remember when I was a kid, my mom and aunt made a big batch of Bread and butter pickles. They were great. My dad did a crock of dills one year, as well. Mom and I were not fans of Dills, but dad said they turned out great.
I would lile to try some time. Used to have a neighbor who did a lot of canning. Wish she still lived in neighborhood

Oh, I just re-read your post, and saw they are refrigerator pickles. That sounds like an interesting project.

Used to do this every year. I do miss putting up pickles. jams. jellies. Especially since we grew them ourselves or traded with neighbors. I loved doing it even though my girls did not like having to shell the peas I had picked early that morning. That's okay because I let y'all sleep late on spring and summer mornings while I was gathering the produce. Y'all have to shell and get those veggies ready for me to can, pickle and freeze. They loved the eating in the winter months. Made the fridge pickles and regular ones too.

@Ruth n Jersey I have never seen anything like that. Cool you still have it. Can you slice potatoes on it? Do you need to sharpen it, like with knifes?
I've never sharpened it and potatoes work well. Adjustable also. If the veggie is to wide you have to cut it in half but I rarely have to do that. My mom had one for years before I got mine. I think it was something you could pick up in Woolworth stores. Not expensive at all. Today if they were available I bet it would rust out in a couple of months.
