Planning some much needed dental work

About 10 years ago, I had some teeth removed and had some partial dentures put in. They have served me well, but now they have gotten loose, and are making some sore spots. Plus, some of my remaining teeth are not doing well.
After much thought, I have decided to go the route my husband did and have the remaining teeth pulled and get a full set of dentures. Rick said it was the best decision he made.
I was talking with my brother, and it turns out he is having to make a decision about his own teeth as well. We decided that, despite good oral hygene, we inherited our mother's bad teeth. She had dentures as well.
Yuck. not looking forward to the several visits it will take to do it. For fittings, having the teeth pulled, etc. But it has to be done.

My teeth are in lousy shape, too. I have two molars and two teeth missing, one of them in the front. As long as I am able to masticate my food I am keeping my own teeth, ugly or not. I hear about dentures coming loose or falling and people making fun of people with dentures. And that is not including the expense (I don't have dental insurance and don't want it). I'm already 77 and ''plan to live to 82-85'' (joke) so hopefully I can keep them functioning until I croak. We'll see.

How long do you have to wait after the teeth pulling to heal before you can use the dentures? Good luck!

Not long, if memory serves. I seem to remember that when I had my teeth pulled for the partials, they gave me a temporary set while the new ones were being made. A few days is all.

When I did 10 or so years ago what you are doing now, I had a couple of pre extraction visits to the “denturist” who would be making the plates& he took molds etc & prepared a set of temps that went right in after the last extraction was completed. I think it helped healing & reduced discomfort by putting some pressure on the gums..
The final set lasted a good 10 years with proper care & a couple of minor repairs , just had a new upper made in Jan when the old one really broke apart. Good luck!

I needed to have most of my lower teeth removed about 5 years ago. I'd already lost the upper teeth about 50 years ago and had a denture there.

I chose to have the lower canine teeth retained and repaired to act as anchors to the lower denture and that has worked really well for me.

A great many people do have problems with the lower denture because it doesn't have as great a surface for grip.

it's gonna be great...just like a new set of tires....years ago there weren't fluoride toothpastes or rinse...we had lots of iron in our well water too

If you are going to be using a denture adhesive, your dentist may have a recommendation or you might try different ones till you find one that works best for you. The only things I’ve never been able to do with my dentures are bite into an apple or gnaw on an ear of corn.

What adhesive do you use?
I once read about this woman whose gums were so tough from years of use that she could bite into an apple.

I have been very fortunate with my dental care because I am able to go to UMKC dental school. The quality of their work is superior, in my experience, to going to a local dentist. All work by a dental student must be OK'd by an instructor before I can leave, even cleanings. Plus, they typically charge from 1/2 to 2/3 what a dentist in private practice would charge.

I have been going there for 5 years now and have had cleanings, fillings, crowns, an inlay and also went to advanced periodontics and had two tissue grafts to my lower gum to better support some of my lower teeth. I still have all of my original teeth, minus the four that were extracted before I had orthodontia, even my wisdom teeth. I can't see any reason why I should expect to have any trouble with my teeth in the future.

Here's hoping!

I use Polident as well. Hard things are difficult. Like corn on the cob and apples.. I have not been in for any sort of religning or anything, and plus, since I feel a couple of my remaining teeth are not doing well, if they needed to come out, they would have to re-do my partials, anyway. So I figure I will just go for the whole darn thing.
I may still wait until after the new year, but depends on how long it will all take to do.

I was in the process of getting dentures also. This past June I developed a terrible toothache. I found a dentist who fit me in. Two had to be removed and the subject of dentures came up. I was suppose to come back in a few weeks to discuss dentures and have the rest removed.
I had terrible pain after the extractions and even called the dentist. She ordered antibiotics and finally the area healed. Thinking twice about going through that again with my remaining teeth I didn't go back.
This past week I felt a sore spot on my gum. Touching the area with my finger I can feel a rather large piece of tooth trying to make its way through the gum. I guess she didn't get it all out.
It makes me wonder what would have happened had I had the remaining teeth removed and got the dentures. Obviously this area would now be pressing on the dentures.
I have 3 options now. I can go back to the dentist who did the extractions. I don't think she did a very good job. It is a large piece of tooth that I think should not have been overlooked,go to a new dentist, or hope it works its way out. I have no dental insurance. As of now I'm doing the wait and see approach.
I wish you good luck with yours Marie. Once this is resolved I will follow through with another dentist and get dentures also. I'm sure my problem isn't the norm but it scared me off.

What a terrible experience Ruth! I would have never gone back to a dentist who left a piece of tooth in. I had one experience where a tooth came out in pieces & the dentist took an X-ray after he thought he got it all to make sure there weren’t any fragments left

Oh Ruth, that is a very terrible experience! I am very sorry that happened and is happening to you. :(

I hope you might go to a new dentist.
I know any dental work is extremely expensive, but that is sad that one did not do the work correctly and you deserve better condition for your mouth.

I hope that type of experience is very rare!

It’s not terribly unusual to have some tiny bone fragments working their way through the gums. I have had a few after extractions with bone grafts but not very often.
