Practical Preps for Short-Term Emergencies

Me either. when it comes to water, you can't have enough. I keep a fairly large supply on hand. I haven't even scratched the surface with that small list. For instance, I keep his and hers protection handy. (with a bit of extra protection) (y) (y) and then there's my magazine collection. (for light reading) ;)
and on and on. :) Some may say I've gone overboard, but, that's alright with me for nobody knows what the future holds.

Mmmmm'k, lol! @squatting dog I had in mind a days to several weeks timeframe. If things ever get bad enough to warrant your protection stash, I'm going to try to jump in the path of a bullet. Don't want to live in a Mad Max world!

Oh... well, for a short duration emergency, (72 hour more or less) a bug out bag will work. I keep one in my car in case an emergency happens while away from home.
What I have listed here weighs in about 20 lbs including the back pack.
Here's what I keep in mine: (been a while since I inventoried, so I may have forgot to list some stuff).
air filtration mask
space blanket
life straw water filtration cup
fire starter
flashlight
paracord
duct tape
multi tool
Knife
rations (mre style)
cold weather gloves
woolly hat
extra socks
solar charger
re-chargeable batteries
first aid kit
painkillers
antibiotic ointment
alcohol wipes
compass

Or several weeks. I guess beyond a couple of weeks, some places will get Mad Max. Post Katrina, a Hattiesburg MS man killed his sister in a fight over a bag of ice. And then there's NOLA post Katrina...

@Bonnie Just found this! Sterno has flameless chem packs for heating food. You would have to have a pan to fit the groves near the bottom of the black tray for it to work.

Oh! Just thought of another thing that might be needed, especially if you are a woman traveling alone, and run across those who may want to cause you harm.
Bring some wasp spray! If you are being physically attacked, you can spray this in the face of the intruder or accoster and it will momentarily disable him. Don't use bear spray because it will spray all over! Wasp spray will be focused on exactly where you spray it.

Looked over power outage preps last night due to the tornado threat and realized I left these little Throfire lights off the list. They're wonderful. Charge by USB and hand crank ....hand crank is fairly easy to do.
