Pretty soon we will be fenceless.

Our whole married life we have had a home with a fence around. I doubt it would ever keep out intruders but it does keep the critters away from my garden although recently the deer have jumped it on occasion. No pathway worn in my grass from the neighborhood kids taking a short cut like my neighbor has and I just always liked the feeling of looking out and thinking this is my domain. Years ago it was a blessing when we had the dogs who could roam the three quarter acre to there hearts content and no walking necessary in bad weather, even our cats were content to stay put.. All good things come to an end. It is now rusted and an eyesore. The gate is leaning. Tossed around leaving the posts and repainting them and just getting the fence itself. Way to expensive for our fixed income and at our age it just doesn't make sense. It won't even add value to the house if other neighbors don't have a fence also and they don't. At least that's what it said online. So this weekend it will be coming down. It was a lot to trim and will make cutting the grass much easier as well as less leaves getting caught in the fence each fall. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

Over 30 years ago there was no fence on one side of my back yard, and a short slotted on on the other. There was always a chain link back fence that separates our yards from the open space behind us, I think that was put in by the city. I can't imagine being without a fence where I live, impossible really for me since I always have a dog. Good luck, I wouldn't want people walking around in my back yard or have the threat of someone's dog running over and attacking my cat on my own property. I don't have a big lot like you though. I know fencing can be expensive, my husband put ours in, 6' privacy fence ASAP, and we repair when needed. You save some money doing it yourself, but it is hard work pouring cement, setting posts, etc.

Yes SeaBreeze this is going to be an adjustment for me. My son does a lot of the upkeep for us and has very limited time. The hubby is really feeling the effects of old age so anything I can do to make it easier on my son I have to do. The hubby put in the fence over 30 years ago and I remember the digging and pouring of cement as well. I guess as we age adjustments have to be made. I still do as much as I can. I maintain the beds ,flowers and veggie garden and any painting that must be done outside as well. Also window washing summer and fall. Shed cleaning coming up soon. Those little mice find there way in there over the winter and chew on netting for the garden even fertilizer bags.. This year they had a picnic with a roll of paper towels I left out there by mistake..
