Principal Says Crossing Guard, 88, Died Saving 2 Kids

I don't understand that story tbh... it says the crossing guard yelled at the children to stop, and so prevented them stepping out in front of the car, so where was he?.. was he in the middle of the road?
 
I just saw this on the news and though I was also multi-tasking, I got the impression he pushed the children out of the way of a speeding car. God bless him for his bravery. May he R.I.P.
