Pronouncing words>>>>

Our neighboring state seems to have a difficult time pronouncing its own name. "Missouri". Some pronounce it 'miz-ou-ra'. Others, 'miz-ou-ree'. Heard an interesting perspective on radio this past week. Is 'Miami" pronounced 'mi-am-a'? Is 'Mississippi' pronounced 'miss-a-sip-a'? Of course not! If it ends in 'i', it's 'miz-ou-ree'!!!! Of course, living that close, I refer to it as "Misery"!!!! :>)

Thanks Falcon that was funny. When I was young I worked at this pancake house waiting tables. I went to this table where sat a guy from Louisiana. I asked him what he wanted to order. He told me but I had no idea what he had just said. I asked him 3 more times. Each time he would repeat his order and I had no idea what he had just said. Finally I was too embarrassed to ask him again so I just ordered him a plate of 2 over easy eggs with sausage hash browns and toast . I took it to his table with a cup of coffee. He didn't complain or get mad he just ate it. I always look back on that and laugh. That guy was American & I could not understand a word he said.

Oregon in many midwestern states is pronounced Or-e-ghan. They laughed at me in Portland when I pronounced it that way. They pronounce it Or-e-gun.

I've never heard valet pronounced with an eat sound anywhere in the country. I've only heard ay.

I got a few of them but not all. Must be just a result of verbal laziness that becomes accepted. Like the little town I used to live near is referred to as Amerst, but it's actually named Am-herst.

'Err' does rhyme with 'hair'.

The late comedian Dave Allen, related a discussion about someone who pronounced 'schedule' as 'skedule' . He came to the conclusion that they were talking 'skit'.
