Proof that I'm losing it,

Two days ago I sent a check in the mail for a purchase, pre pay if you will....today
I get e-mail and call that they could not accept the check because I FORGOT TO SIGN the damn thing........😖😫
accch..easily done.. We in the UK haven't used cheques in many years ( well most of us)... but even when I was young, I remember forgetting to sign them sometimes

If that's the worst thing you've done, I would say you are still functioning and healthy. You may have been looking over the check for the correct date, or the amount. And just got in a hurry to mail the thing....don't worry about it.

Nah, You're not loosing it, at least not yet! 😁

That's not so bad, Hawky. A couple of months ago, I sent a check to the wrong company. 🥴 I've never done anything like that before. I didn't realize it until the company I should've sent the check to sent me an overdue bill. I'm never late with payments. In fact, I pay early. Then I realized what had happened. In my electronic bill pay, the companies are listed next to each other, and I was looking in the wrong place when I sent it. My bad. What p*ssed me off was that the wrong company cashed the check when I didn't owe them any money. I straightened it out, and they sent me a refund. I called the company I should've sent the check to and explained why I was "overdue". Thankfully, because they know I've never been late on a payment and have been doing business with them for a long time, they accepted my explanation NP.

So, I hope it makes you feel better to know that you're not the only one. 😉

Small town America - some tradesmen (like the electrician and plumber) and the trash collection company here don't accept credit or debit cards for payment so I still need to write checks. I don't mind it but like @Remy I review everything multiple times before I mail it out...did I sign it, does the numerical amount match the written amount (yes, I've made that mistake), did I include the invoice or account number on the memo line, did I write the correct year for the date, did I tear off one check or inadvertently tear off two???? Makes me nuts but I have to double and triple check myself sometimes.

Many years ago I wrote a check for the final payment on a piece of equipment and no sooner had I mailed the check and the machine self destructed. A week later I got a call that I had mistakenly filled in different amounts on the check. Oh! While I have you on the line... They wouldn't fix the machine and ended up with a worthless piece of paper. Pay back is a, anyway, my machine didn't get repaired either so I guess we're even. To the point, I was much younger and still had a "senior moment".

I totally also check to make sure I didn't accidently tear off two checks. I check that the next check number is the one after the check I just took out of the book.

I got my car smog check this week and went to AAA to pay for and get my tags. They both charge a fee for credit cards. So I certainly didn't pay that way.

That made me feel better! Thank you, @Bella! ☺️

I still write checks because our landscaper and electrician will only accept them since they are working "off the clock" from their regular jobs. I also have to send a check for property taxes and our annual homeowners' fees.

Hawkdon, if that's the worst mistake you've made recently you're still ahead of the rest of us!

Well there you go, some of us haven't the first idea how to pay remotely without using a chequebook. Those people who point their phone at some gizmo make my head explode. And those weird square bar code wotsits, I saw some fellow zap one with his watch. WTF!
lol..bet you don't know another person who use cheques... barely anyone in the UK uses cheques, not because of paying with a phone, but because the vast majority of businesses phased out accepting cheques as payment, long ago..

When was the last time you saw someone write a cheque out at the supermarket ?

Did you know credit cards have been in usage since the 60's.. that chip and pin have been introduced since 20 years ago ?

Today, none of the High Street providers offers a chequebook to customers as standard. Those who want one must make a request.

Some new mobile banks, such as Monzo and Starling Bank, do not offer a chequebook at all.

Yet despite making up just 1 pc of all payments, cheques remain vital to thousands of people.

I still use cheques for some things, and forgetting to sign is easily done. I'm also resisting the urge to use my card in shops. Some shops won't take cash now....I just take my business elsewhere!

More and more shops won't take cash now.. that annoys me. I like to pay with card, but I also often pay with cash if I have some on me, and I like to have the option..

I am dreading the day when they will only accept payment by Phone.. . My husband has paid for everything using his phone for years now.... . but I;ve always resisted having my banking on my phone... He said it's perfectly safe .. but no it worries me too much..

Boy, I'll be in trouble if they don't take debit cards. I don't know how to pay with a phone, or if my so called "smart" phone is even capable of that. I've tried downloading apps on my phone and they just don't work. Dumb phone....

Checks are accepted in most stores around here, and by mail for purchases if so desired .... but I rather not write a check to anyone anymore.
I don't like going thru the ordeal, when I can just give someone my credit card information.
