Prosperity preachers and cult-like groups

It's fascinating to watch these mega rich preachers on the God Channels. Some of them have private jets and live in millionaire mansions. They have made Christianity and God into their own circus to make money. I wouldn't dream of giving them a penny.

Why do people listen to them and fill their mega churches? It's grotesque, their egos and they brazenly talk about how God speaks to them. They have so much to say, mainly about themselves.

I have known people who became involved in such churches and began giving away lots of money and it was sad to see them taken in by all the hysterical nonsense. I knew some who got into 'spiritual churches' and went really weird. I suppose people just want to belong and be accepted, so they go along with all sorts of nonsense, it's so sad. Often they get recruited when most vulnerable, after bereavement for example.

The slimiest evangelist on television of all times I believe would be Robert Tilton. This slimeball has been sued so many times. Sometimes I couldn't help but watch his performance wondering how many people would be stupid enough to believe him. Apparently there were millions. I actually heard him say about pledging money to his ministries one time, something like: 'You say you only have $1,000 left to your name? Don't worry. Send it to me, and I'll say a prayer and God will take care of all of your problems."

Belong and be accepted is a key point. I think that is how the Jehovah Witness's got my oldest brother. And wow did they help turn him into a jerk supreme. And I think those people are supposed to donate also.

I knew a woman who's grandmother on low income was sending money to these church places. Of course they sold her name, she got more solicitations and sent more.

Here’s what I do when it’s time to give at my church. I pull out a $100 bill and make sure plenty of people see it. As the bag comes by I pretend to drop it in but I palm it instead. Brilliant if I do say so myself. Nobody has a clue, lol.

How do you think money was obtained to build the cathedrals of Europe? Cash for the cathedral would wipe away sin and if a large enough donation, secure a place in Heaven.

Something similar used to exist in Islam. If a rich man funded the building of a new mosque he would be assured of a place in Paradise.

The prosperity preachers are promising riches in this life without any assurance of success.

Me? I prefer the actual teachings of Jesus about the value of wealth that is not shared with those who have none. It is a millstone around the necks of the greedy. The religious snake oil peddlers need to contemplate that analogy as it applies to them.

So much of the noisy, self righteous(you know who they are) so called Christians tarnish the image of all Christianity, as they publicly embrace such un-Christian leadership and ideals, seemingly rejecting the actual teachings of Christ.

Thanks for the warning.

I prefer to make a monthly donation using direct debit. It goes to the congregation bank account as an anonymous donation via a special bank account.

I got hooked on a anti-capitalist preacher. Yep, I have been upset with crony capitalism for a long time. When I met a guy who had a church who was preaching "Live simply, so that others might live", I joined. As a result, 30 years later, I have only $800 SS eacch month. I just got accepted for our States Medical Health Care division, and they will pay for Doctor visits, and I get $174 to cover the Medicare premiums. I have little $ when all the bills are paid. So, I made my bed, now I have to live and die in it. :) I am OK with that. I still think crony capitalism is our numero uno problem. No regrets. :)

Boy, do I remember him! He came to Detroit often and it was a big deal. Thousands of people would attend.
Did you ever get a check for several thousand dollars thanks to the reverend? I did not. Must be the leftover Catholic in me that ruined things.
