Protein Powders?

This could go under several different sub areas but I think I'll put it here as people may use protein powders for different reasons, if they use them of coarse.

I tried that Ka'chava that's advertised all over YouTube. I wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't tried some a co-worker brought into work. She keeps purchasing it but I don't think I will again as it's really expensive. Like $80.00 when you add shipping and tax. Something I knew ahead. Don't yell at me for spending that please. :)

I found some protein powder at the health food store for 40 something dollars and I'm going to try that next. I wanted something filling but seriously Metamucil can probably do the same thing and I'm seriously considering getting something along that line.

Ha! I was going to ask the same thing! My daughter told me to start taking protein powder because she does and loves it!
I bought chocolate flavored protein powder and have been taking it every morning for a few weeks.
I feel good but then I ALWAYS feel good. Protein is wonderful for the body, I know.
I'm anxious to know if anyone taking this has noticed any dramatic results.

I keep a four-pack of nutrition/protein shakes in the refrigerator and have half of one as a tasty snack.

Right now, I'm using 100 calorie Muscle Milk Zero Sugar because I had a coupon for it.

I don't really think that I need the supplement, but I enjoy them.

IMO it would be best if we get the protein we need from inexpensive food items instead of heavily processed protein powders and shakes.

Calculators like this one can help you determine your daily protein needs.

A few small servings of skim milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, beans, chicken, fish, whole grains, etc... usually provide more than enough protein for most people.

Ha! On my Great-grandfather's 100th birthday, They asked how he lived so long with such health?
He said, "For the last 40 years, I've eaten cottage cheese every morning!"
( He was very handsome at 100 years too!)

Wow, can you imagine if he had started eating it as a child?

Hi @Gaer Haven't seen you in a bit! I'm glad it's working for you. I've noticed no difference, just a meal replacement. I'm out of strawberries so today I used 1/2 orange and 1/2 apple to blend it with.

@Aunt Bea Agree with you on the protein. I'm kind of looking at it as a meal replacement also. This Ka'chava stuff is filling. It doesn't stay with you as long as they say though. In my opinion.

As I understand it, Bone Broth is the absolute best for Collagen that supports the joints, skin and hair. I use a scoop of Collagen Peptides in my coffee every morning, so I am a wimp. :ROFLMAO:
bone broth is amazing for health.

Ideally, it is best to, you know, have your doctor go over your diet and recommend what he thinks is best.

Many people have some level of allergy to soy. Many protein powders are soy.

Other protein powders contain dairy. And some folks don't do well with dairy.

If you are ok with diary, you can do just pure whey powder.

I use Jarrow unflavored. This is about $30 for 40 servings...

tastes pretty yucky, chalky to tell you the truth, but it is cheap and healthy and no sugar.

a lot of folks are opting for protein powder from peas. Advantage is that it is neither soy nor dairy.

If you want a super healthy, meal replacement protein powder...this is chock full of nutrients. Protein source is pea, rice and some soy.

Taste? I don't know, I don't particularly like it. But if I put it in some juice, I can mask the taste just fine.

tons of ingredients, so, if you tend toward food allergies, make sure you go through the ingredient list.

I wonder if bone broth will help reduce the flip'n fragile skin I have on my forearms and hands, that makes me crazy.
There are specific nutrients for skin health. Also, might want to check in on your hydration levels, make sure they are optimized.

Most folks under-hydrate and that causes a lot of issues. And, of course, a good nutrient based lotion to feed the skin couldn't hurt.

I am sure bone broth is good for just about everything. Might be something more specifically geared to skin health.

Here's a Web MD article on nutrients for skin health:

They carry this one at a local health food store. I think it's around $45.00 a bag.
You don't have to get rid of cravings. Just get better treats (truvani.com)

But...it has a lead warning? Not sure if this is due to the pea protein or what. But that seems a bit concerning.

you are probably referring to rice protein. Rice has a naturally occurring arsenic content! Not lead, but arsenic (potentially just as bad).

Generally, the arsenic content of rice is not an issue. On rare occasions some processing of rice creates a product with a higher arsenic content. Not at a poisonous level, but at a level that it does need to be recalled once and awhile.

@JonSR77 Interesting. I'm thinking it's the concentration that is the concern. I'm wondering if I should just stick with good ol' soy milk.
if you are not allergic to soy...exactly zero problem.

I have not ever heard of pea protein being recalled. Peas, like soy, are legumes. Rice is a grain. I am not sure why it accumulates arsenic. But I can't imagine it has any relationship to peas.

Probably are some professional farmer people out there who know. Maybe the Rodale people in Pennsylvania.

I just read a research study that said be careful with protein powders, drinks and bars. If they have Milk Concentrate, Whey Protein Concentrate , Soy or Vegetable protein .. no problem.
BUT, if they contain Whey Protein Isolate and/or Branch Chain Aminos it contributes to hair loss,/balding in male AND female. And hormone changes.

It has to do with the Branch Chain Amino Acids that the isolate form contains. Athletes and Pro body builders only use the Whey Isolate types because it has the branch chain aminos. They build bigger, better muscles faster and easier etc. But does this by messing around with their hormones.
I started looking through our old Muscle and Fitness magazines we used to subscribe to. and yep most Pro body builders are totally or partially bald and the women have a receding hair line and thin hair!

I just noticed that the drinks I use only have Milk Concentrate in them. But when I started using them years ago they also contained the Whey Concentrate .
