Pumping Our Own Gas

Why? Metro marts are going to become rest stops while our youth rest and recharge their stuff.
/thin sliced pizza, quart of Coke and after relief is all!

Isn't New Jersey the only State that pumps gas for you now?
NJ is the only state where you're not allowed to pump your own gas. I don't know the particulars, but all the other states must have some pumps where someone else can pump your gas for you... like for handicapped drivers?

My station has a call button on each pump for people that need assistance.

You have to get out of your vehicle to push the button and be willing to wait until the cashier, usually the only employee, has time to come out and assist you.

It seems like a sort of backhanded form of assistance that has little or no value.

I’m not sure what cost effective practice would be possible for the occasional customer that needs assistance.

I wonder if this assistance could be provided by Scouts or similar youth organizations on an "as available" option as part of service requirements? Of course legal liability and such might prohibit that and erratic availability might make it worthless.

The first self service petrol pumps were installed in 1963 in the UK. Before that you bought petrol at a 'garage', as selling petrol was part of motor sales and repair establishments. I'm not sure when the 'attended' pumps were phased out, it might have been in the 70's, so I was surprised to find pump attendants when I first went to the US.
