Question about Privacy settings

In the privacy settings there is a box at the bottom that asks if you want someone to be able to view your identities. What does that mean? I don't understand what an identity is. Does that keep them from being able to see my username?

The identities are your social media accounts, they can be edited at the bottom of your account details page.
