Question about reading/distance prescription glasses

I am ordering my first pair of glasses and am questioning whether to include the photosensitive lenses available in grey or brown..i.e. the glasses that darken in the sunlight and bright lights and are clear indoors. I have heard from one person they were disappointed because they were not as dark as they anticipated in the sun. Any opinions? Thank you in advance... :)

I'm not sure but I think you can choose how dark you want them. That would be something you could ask the eye doctor. It would be easier than using those clip on sunglasses. I had some in grade school that were so dark they were like sunglasses when I first came indoors. LOL

I had a pair about 5 years ago. They were OK when in the sun, but seemed to take several minutes to return to normal when I went back indoors....it was almost like needing a flashlight to see where I was going. I went back to normal glasses on my next exam, and just keep clip-ons in the vehicles, and for use outdoors.

I have used them for many years and am happy with them. Like a lot of things, they are a bit of a compromise .

Thank you Marciks..I have large sunglasses that I use now over my over distance glasses

Thanks Don..several have told me the transition time coming to lighten the lens indoors is longer than they like...I have fairly large sunglasses I now put over my OTC driving glasses

I tried them twice some years apart. Zero satisfaction. I now use a pair of sun glasses that will slip over my regular glasses. They work very well.

I have computer glasses that work very well for viewing my desktop monitor. I had them made as bifocals and the lower part lets me focus on papers on my desk and then on the monitor using the upper part.

I got my first glasses when I was 14, they cost $14 including the examination. That was a long time ago.

I like the automatically tinting eye glasses and have had many pairs of them. I have also had many pairs of clear glass lens eye glasses. I like wearing clear lens glasses because the colors that I see are the true colors. When driving a car I have found that when I am wearing self tinting glasses the automatic tinting of the glasses does not work because the car windshield stops almost all the UV rays from coming through it. So I would carry clip on sun glasses to put on my self tinting glasses.

I haven't had them, so I can't give any personal experience, in that way.

Personally, it is not one of the optional features that I would choose for myself.
I'd prefer to continually try not to misplace the clip=ons,;)
or to deal with the inconvenience of carrying those large type that go over the glasses.:giggle:

Hope you will be glad for whichever you decide on!:geek:

Thanks, Manatee...I seem to be hearing more dislikes than likes on the photosensitive glasses...

Lawrence..Thanks..that is VERY interesting since I just read the transition glasses do not work as well in the car...I am leaning toward just using my large frame sunglasses over my prescription glasses

I've never had the changing glasses either. My glasses are stupid expensive due to my prescription. Like Don stated, you can get clip on shades or fit over sunglasses. I've used both.
Remy Thank you...sorry your glasses are expensive but happy we all can get glasses :)

Kaila..TY ...Currently, I use over-the-counter glasses ..I have more than 10 pairs all over the house, some in my car, in my purse etc. :D ...some for driving and some for reading. Now one eye is not focusing as well as the other so I have to go to prescriptions...won't be as convenient...Thank you for well wishes! I will tell myself just be grateful I can have glasses...

Hub had a pair and never got another one. When I ask him why he said they took too long to readjust when going in or out of a building in the sunlight.

I have two pairs of glasses. Sunglasses work pretty well either way so why fix it if its not broke...just don't get too dark a pair when ordering. Mine are "rose colored". Always wanted to go through life wearing rose colored glasses...lol.

I've had them for about 30 years ago. When I first got them they were made of glass & they got really dark but again when you came inside it took about 2 minutes to get back clear. Years passed & My Eye Dr's place that makes the glasses said we can't get glass anymore so we have to go with the plastic Photo gray.

So my first pair was really different as they did not get as dark as the old glass ones. In time they have improved & the last pair a year ago gets almost as dark as the glass ones. Also, change back to clear in about 30 seconds when coming inside.

One thing if you do a lot of driving the windshield tint will stop the glasses from turning so it's like no darkness at all. I keep a pair of slip-over sunglasses in the car to use on sunny days. Much better than $$$ expensive prescription sunglasses. I tried them once. Next year my script changed & the sunglasses was no good. That's why I use the slip-over ones now.

One other thing is to ask for your bifocal numbers (if your glasses have bifocals). Then I go to W Mart, CVS any other store that has cheap glasses & I get a pair with that prescription on it there. $10.00 is much better than $200.00 for a pair from the opthomoligest place. Use those for your computer glasses.

I think you will be happy with the improvement you will have, in your vision and your comfort, from having the correct script for each eye, by getting someone decent to prescribe them for you.

I am like you. I remind myself (very often!) that I am grateful for what I can manage to have.

Myself, I truly think it would be a nuisance to not be able to change glasses right away, when I need them light or dark. Especially in safety situations, including driving. But some people do love those transitioning ones.

When we are older we need to look after our eyes . In Canada we call them transitions, I've worn them for years and takes no time at all to clear once indoors. they come in various shades of dark. Together with progressives they make for the perfect fit. Progressives come with two prices, if you buy the cheaper lenses your vision might be slightly distorted.
