Question about tailoring

If you took your pants to a tailor and told her to make it say, one inch shorter, without
trying it on, then it still looks too long on you, would you expect the tailor to fix it
again at no extra charge? Assuming she is already paid. It is possible that it was hemmed
less than an inch. And you cannot do this yourself.

If the job was done as you asked, then you are stuck
with the result I fear.

If you don't want to try them on for measurement,
then you should take a second pair that fit you and
ask that they be made to the same length.

I wouldn't dream of starting an agument in this case,
it would only make you look mean.

Mike.

I agree it's always best to try the garment on and let the tailor/seamstress take the actual measurement.

All of my dress shirts and slacks are tailored. At 6’4”, it is difficult to find the perfect fit. Casual clothes, I don’t really care too much. Close fit is good enough. I try on each piece before my tailor does any cutting or sewing. She is great.

In this case the customer is not always right, and downright nervy, IMO

Agreed, but with one issue: Trying on a different pair to get the right measurement may not work out very well. The length is dependent on other factors - like the rise & the cut - different with different brands. And different pants will not sit on the same place on your waist.
I have perfectly-fitting Nautilus jeans that are size 36 waist & 32 length. But the same size Levis are too tight in the waist, too loose in the seat & too long.
Even the same brand & stock number will have variations in size & length.

No, you can't expect the tailor to do it again for no charge. You said one inch and she says she hemmed them one inch, and you hadn't tried them on beforehand. Now, if you had said "make these pants a 31 inch inseam," that might be a different story.

That’s exactly my problem. Getting the waist, rise and length are tough to find in dress slacks. Then, I also need some material taken in around the butt, which interferes with getting the rise correct. I pay a lot to get the right fit with my dress clothes, which I don’t buy much anymore.

Oh you really need to try them on, I hem my own pants I have 2 identical pair of jeans but one pair needs to be hemmed 1” the other pair 1 3/4“ ....go figure!

Pants never fit me off the rack. Too long or loose. Most of my life I didn't
hire a tailor and sometimes they do NOT listen to me. I distrusted them and so I say
better to have a Taylor Swift than a swift tailor. haha. I .went to a family run shop
where they know me and she offered to redo my pants for an extra $10. They are casual
pants only. I don't like complaining, but just once I'd like to hear a cleaner or tailor apologize.

You got what you asked for.....on the other hand a good tailor would have insisted on doing a proper measure.

Fortunately better too long rather than too short as they can still be adjusted.

I don't know much about 'tailoring". But I assume if you asked a tailor to rehem something 1 inch, you should be able to measure the hem to see if it is 1 inch? If it isn't, well it needs to be redone. If it is, well, you are the one , who told the tailor what to do, and she followed your instructions, regardless of how they look.
