Question for the ladies: frequent UTI's??

Right now I am feeling the all too familiar symptoms of a coming UTI. If so, would be my 3rd this year. Several years ago I went through a year or so where I had 3 or 4 of them.
I did some research. Some places say take cranberry pills, others say they do not work. Other places say probiotics. Tried them, and they do not treat me well, so I stopped. I have been trying to drink more water and keep up with frequent personal hygeiene (taken to using the moist wipes after using the bathroom).
I am going to call the doctor tomorrow to make yet another appointment. Any of you experiencing these of late?

I would try taking vitamin C, unless you think you already get enough in your diet.

Do not think I do, so maybe it would not hurt to try. I was thinking of adding some sort of suplement to my diet, anyway. Going to ask when I go to doctor tomorrow.

I really don't get them often, but I've felt them coming on a couple of times and knocked them out with pure cranberry juice, several glasses per day until I was sure it was gone, always worked and just did it again this past August with success. It's very tart, so you may have to add water when you drink it, it will take several bottles before you're done, but well worth it, no harmful prescription meds from the doctor.

My mother in law used to get them frequently in her old age, after numerous treatments by her doctor, we and the doc convinced her to drink a full glass of unsweetened cranberry juice per day. She did, and was not getting any more infections. I highly recommend this treatment, I thought about the pills, but I doubt they're strong enough to be effective, and they are really pricey. Don't use the cranberry juice "cocktail", it just has to be pure unsweetened cranberry juice, mixed with no other juices.

Before and after intercourse I make sure my bladder is empty, and I think that helps too. Good luck Marie. This is what I use, still have two bottles in the pantry if I need them again, available at most supermarkets or health food stores.

I had a recurring UTI until a doctor told me to do two things every day so my body doesn't provide a safe haven for the bacteria that cause the infection.

The first is 1 teaspoon baking soda mixed into a glass of water.

The other is organic raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Some of you may remember the old book Folk Medicine by Dr. Jarvis in which he passed on an old folk cure for many things that ail you: ½ to 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and ½ to 1 tablespoon honey mixed into a glass of water. I've never been into half-measures so I've always used the full 1 tablespoon of each.

I drink the ACV concotion first thing every morning and the baking soda at night.

One of the best things that happened is that I sometimes get up once during the night to pee when before I was getting up regularly. My joints quit aching too. I haven't had a UTI since I began this regime several years ago.

I drink switchel every day and I think it helps too. If you don't know about switchel, farm wives used to send jugs of it out to the farmworkers. It's like the original Gatorade and it tastes a lot better.

2 tablespoons unfiltered apple cider vinegar (preferably organic because of the apples). Must have the mother because this is a fermented drink.

3 tablespoons raw honey, blackstrap molasses or a combination of the two

2" piece of finely minced fresh ginger root

Enough water to fill the jar

Mix ingredients in a quart jar, shake well and refrigerate overnight. A variation is to use 2 cups water and add seltzer water before you drink it to make it fizzy.

You can add lemon or lime juice for extra flavor.

When I start feeling just the slightest sensation of it coming on, I take an AZO Cranberry Uninary Tract Health pill which works for me. I had never heard of it until a family member told me about it and then my doctor asked me if I had heard of it, which surprised me since it's an over the counter pill.

I have had a few over the years, always when traveling. I think sitting in the car for a long period of time has something to do with it as well as not being able to get to a bathroom when needed while on the road. My son in law is a doctor and I get some meds to take with me on the trip just in case.

Ive only had a few and all the times were when I was visiting my sister in New Jersey. She has an in ground pool and I stayed in my wet suit and got my first one.
my brother in law is a dr and he wrote me a prescription but I didn't connect the pool with my UTI until it happened the following year after swimming there.

Now, once I'm out of the pool I run to shower and change. :)

I have had UTI for years, at least 3 or 4 times a year. I have antibiotics in the
medicine chest at all times and call my Urologist when I know I have an attack.
I am up several times during the night, if I am up more than 6 times my Urologist
has suggested that I take a sleeping pill and that seems to help; but I don't want
sleeping pills to become a habit, so I hold off until I am really sleep deprived.
I will use 'protection' if on a long trip and always use 'wipes'.
The joys of being in my late eighties!!

Well went to doctor yesterday. Saw Laurie the really cool PA. She confirmed what I knew started me on Bactrim. She suggested that when I come in for my scheduled visit with my Primary Dr in January to see if should be concerned as to the frequency (my 3rd this year). I am sitting here like a good girl and drinking a nice glass of cranberry juice

Tried all the cranberry routes for recurrent painful UTI,s without relief. The use of topical estrogen cream ( or use of Estring) to the area has solved the problem wonderfully for me. Life is so much better & I haven’t had any more since .

Thanks for this, Jane. I don't get UTI's, but I do wake up at least once during the night to pee, and some relief from aching joints would be a plus! I'm going to try this.

Men don't get them and women do?

Why is that?

Beer?

Could be. LOL. But actually you do just not as often as we do. Read this spoiler
Women tend to get urinary tract infections more often than men because bacteria can reach the bladder more easily in women. The urethra (the opening to your urinary tract) is shorter in women than in men, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel.

Then that's why Beer works. Because we have to go so often the bacteria doesn't get a chance.
