Quilts for Veterans - humbling

I was surprised when an extended family member nominated me to be included in a presentation of quilts for veterans. Actually, I didn't know what to expect. We arrived on time at the designated site, and to my amazement there about twenty handmade quilts, each with a patriotic motif in the their patterns, to be presented. Each Veteran was called upon with a brief comment on their military service, some were individuals who served as a cook while others served in combat. Point was each one of those individuals served in their role and were properly acknowledged.

Each of us were asked to offer a few comments. I felt it important to note two things. No matter what the role of the service each served and every role was worthy of recognition to the individual. Secondly, I wanted to mention that my wife served as well. True she wasn't in Vietnam with me, but was impacted in a way certainly deserving recognition. I'm not sure I realized that at the time, but the years since have delivered that message to me, and each one who served had someone back home, maybe many someones, who shared the experience from its beginning to conclusion. Thank you Judy.

Quilts for Veterans is a foundation supported by donations and some corporate donations as well. The individuals that I saw active in the mission are caring individuals who take their time to apply a skill, making beautiful quilts, to say thank you in a special way. At least in my case, it is a item that will keep with a fond memory and pass along to my family one day along with what it means to me.
