Radio 4 programme about DNA kits

I did put up this topic before but I cannot find it.
Listening again to this programme about people doing home DNA tests for fun and then regretting apparently it is all the rage now, a gift with a difference. Listening to their woes when they found out things that unsettled themselves and their loved ones, I got to thinking. Best stick to socks!

Is there anything more risky and stupid than buying DNA kits as Christmas presents for yourself and family? A woman did just that out of curiosity. The results were most unwelcome and she then spent years tracking down her real father. Her peace of mind was wrecked.

Another was a man who had done his whole family tree, had great meetings up with long lost family over years. Then he decided a DNA kit was a fun idea, only to find out he was adopted. It meant his family tree was rather messed up! He then upset himself and his family as he tracked down his birth mother.

Perhaps ignorance is bliss?

And lots of people fill in their family trees and enjoy the whole process. I know several that have done this.

The media doesn’t write about things that are non-events. They have to find or create a story. I agree that people should think carefully prior to doing it.
