Rainbow Wrap

They were giving these away at the senior center when I was there. They looked good, but I just tried it and it was the most God-awful sandwich I've ever had. The potatoes were under-cooked, hummus was in name only unless you consider loose chick peas (garbanzos) hummus. Hardly any flavor, too. I wonder who thought of this combo?

Sorry, looks like you got screwed royally. I think I will stick with my fish & chips on Friday made right in my kitchen by me. It's nothing to write home about but it sure tastes good with vinegar, ketchup and a good shot of tarter sauce on the fish. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Most likely not just bad, but spoiled.

These days, grocery stores employees are almost always kids, with next to no understanding about refrigerating food items.

They will get a shipment and just leave it out on the loading dock for a few hours, before putting it away, even if it can only be outside of refrigeration for 90 minutes max.

Happens all the time.

The amount of spoiled food I get from grocery stores is terrible.

I no longer buy prepared sandwiches, potato salad, macaroni salad....anything like that.

Maybe it is more of a New Jersey thing, a New York City thing...maybe people in other parts of the country are more responsible.

We knew a guy...he had a vending machine route. When potato chips would get old, he would just take some alcohol and rub off the expiration date on the package. Saw that one, first hand...

What bothers me is that I often see moldy bread on the giveaway table at the senior center. To me it's like saying seniors are only fit to eat garbage or food that isn't fit for others. I know the food donated is past its prime, but they shouldn't send over completely spoiled food.

Where is that happening? That is not legal. Not at all. That has to stop! You should report that to the authorities.

When people are older and frail and get food poisoning? That could be anything from a stomach ache to a fatality. You can kill people with food poisoning, especially older and frail folks.

LOL - they knew how much to charge 'cuz they knew what they were worth. :giggle:
I've already experienced the joys of Salmonella, so I'd just say "No thanks."

Apropos giveaway tables with moldy or spoiled food: at the store where I work, first thing every morning we pull everything with an expiration date of the next day and it's definitely not past its prime. Nothing that's moldy or spoiled is donated. Nothing. We have no control over how long between the time it's picked up and offered for donation; that's left to the organization offering it.

@JonSR77 If the food offered is spoiled, it's a stretch to think that offering it was with the intent to make anybody sick or to commit a crime. Good grief, man, relax.

@debodun That wrap looked like it would be interesting...until I got a mouthful of undercooked potato. Ew. It doesn't sound like even a dousing of Tabasco would disguise it.

As to moldy or spoiled food on a giveaway table? Throw it out. Yup. Just like that. For heaven's sake don't leave it there!

I'm not taking any more of those! I hate to see food wasted, but I'm not going to gag because of that. I did have the spicy lentil wrap for lunch and it was a lot better that the Rainbow Wrap. Sort of like a burrito.

That's too bad. I don't buy any pre-made things like this at Trader Joe's. I know they say they donate items that are about to expire so I suspect this is how they ended up there.

Most of their stuff is pretty good. I don't like their tofu, got some that was spoiled once and I tried their tomato, vegetable soup in a jar and it was terrible. Really kind of tart/sour. I'm not a picky eater but it was un-edible.

There wasn't very much on the giveaway table today. Maybe the word is getting back to Trader Joe's. There was some ugli fruit and bruised apples in a bushel basket and some packages of thin English muffins (crumpets) and tiny boxes of raisins.

If it's the crumpets I'm thinking of, those are good toasted. No problems with less than stellar looking fruit, they are still edible, bruises can be trimmed off and if they are getting too mushy, cook them.

A few years ago, I bought a rotisserie chicken in the store. When I got it home and cut into it, it was still raw inside, only cooked down about an inch from the outside. I sent a complaint to the store through their Web page stating that buying a supposedly cooked chicken and having to cook it again was defeating the purpose. The response was that the chicken are prepared according to their standard procedures. No offer of a refund or replacement of merchandise.
Whadda gonna do?
