Raisins, Sultanas and Currants

I read somewhere a long time ago that the US Dept of Agriculture ordered the destruction of the grapes that currents are made from back in the 1800s or maybe the 1700s, I forget. But those grapes were thought to cause a disease that was going around.

Same thing happened to gooseberries (in the US). The Dept of Ag (or Congress) announced that gooseberries were toxic or something, so people destroyed every gooseberry plant they saw.

Or at least that's what I think I remember reading...long ago.
