Received another card for the former residents

Deb, it's kind of you to put this much thought into the cards, but let it go. I'd return to sender, no longer at this address and let the sender and intended recipient deal with it. The sender could have other ways to contact the recipient.

She hadn't come to get the card, so I took it to the Post Office and asked it be "returned to sender". Then I called her number and left a message telling her what I had done.
But hadn't she already told you to toss it? Won't this appear passive aggressive to her? And if she just lost her mother a week or so ago, she won't be caring about this. Might even think you're harassing her, no? If you'd just sent it back to the sender without telling the recipient you ignored her instructions, she wouldn't have known anything about it.

Is it a federal crime to open someone else's mail? The short answer is “yes.” Opening or destroying mail that is addressed to someone else is a crime called “Obstruction of Correspondence.” It is a serious felony that could lead to prison time

So there @hearlady
No one did anything when my mail box was vandalized at that house I owned. I finally took it away and had everything going to my PO box which was 35 minutes away but I went there weekly. I now live back in this town.

Sounds like another case of bad things happening to good people. Hope you don't experience anything like that again.

So, that cost you more than a postage stamp by driving to the post office and she was bothered again about a card she wanted you to throw out. Next time, please just write on the envelope, Return to Sender and place it in your mailbox.
