Red thing hanging in a neighbor's trellis

I was puzzled to see this strange looking red thing hanging in the trellis next door. I thought maybe they were making Gouda cheese. Then it came to me - probably a gourd hollowed out and painted to make a bird house or feeder. I can't see the other side, though. Could have been a mother's day gift

A pink flamingo that over-ate? :p

Sorry, didn't intend to double-post

Bingo! I'd say you hit it right on the head, Deb, a gourd turned into a birdhouse/feeder, or possibly just a large gourd on display for decoration.

I love whimsical things like that, as they create interest outside of the ordinary.

Not that I'm a bird watcher, probably just the boredom setting in, but I've learned a few tidbits during my window watching and the web. Starlings are the natural enemies of hornets. That being the case I welcome them in my yard since my wife is allergic to stings. The gourd you are watching is used a lot as housing for swallows, I also welcome them now that I know they are the daytime bats of the bird world. Flying, making 90 degree turns, returning to the same place they were hatched year after year will keep the flying insects at bay until nightfall so the bats can takeover.

I really need to get a life!

When I was over at their garage sale this morning, I thought to look at it. Thete's no holes in it as I would have thought if it were a birdhouse or feeder. I've never seen any birds around it, either. It is still a mystery. I probably shoudl have asked, but it may have come across as invasive, if I know my neighbors.

You just had to mention that, didn't you, Deb, just to get us all thinking! LOL!

You're going to have to revisit your neighbour, because that red thing hanging is going to drive me nuts now thinking about it! 🤪
