With the potato salad season coming for many of us, I thought that you might want to know that the russet potato is the way to go. According to a top cook it is the best tasting for scientific reasons that we don't have to bother with here. So, baked, mashed, or boiled enjoy the tastiest potato. I hope this tip is helpful, so let Reliable Ralphy know, and maybe more will be provided.

Ralphy. You are right about russet potatoes, I like them mashed, baked or in a potato salad.
I don't care for yukon gold, it's the yellow colour. I do like sweet potatoes though and they are
good cooked and mashed or cut up, drizzled with olive oil and baked.
Do you cook meals often?

I love sweet potatoes! And I love potato salad made with mayo, but my husband won't touch mayo and neither will our best friends or stepdaughter's family who are the only people we have a BBQ for. I guess it's a British thing.

Sweet potatoes are great, but you gotta have a good russet at times to satisfy the tummy. I use Cain's light for all my mayo needs, and cook every day...

Wish we'd had the tasty "russet" potato when I was a little girl in Germany.
Still remember something called: "Kartoffelmuss mit Zwiebelsosse" (mashed potatoes with onion sauce).
Gran would serve up this huge mound of mashed potatoes surrounded by onion gravy, or if we were very lucky "oil with salt".(on individual plates)
Always being very hungry in those days, I would gobble down all in nano seconds;
however, once in a while I'd tunnel thru the mound, create ditches, craters, roads, you name it. :bowknot:

Funny this topic came up. Just yesterday I made a large batch of mashed potatoes (they reheat nicely for leftovers). Since I had both reds and whites (Russets) I cooked a separate pot of each and mashed both. Three of us did a taste test. Honestly, none of us could tell the difference. I was surprised because I thought I'd read that one was better than the other, especially mashed. I've always used whichever kind I have on hand. After our test, I'll continue doing that.

All potatoes are good but sweet potatoes are far healthier. We have those often enough too.

A spud a day will help you play...
