Remember this singer?

I was listening to XM radio tonight and they played some Boxcar Willie songs. Anyone remember him. He sold a ton of songs mostly from TV and radio ads.
They played Wreck of the old 97 and I swear he sounded like Willie Nelson.
He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and for a while, made a lot of top charts.

I DO remember Boxcar Willie. I don't ever remember him having any big hits, but he was one of the first ones to have the albums that were advertised on TV back then. He would sing a lot of the popular songs of the time, and he did a really good job on most of them.
After that, there was Roger Whittaker, and he had a beautiful voice, and I think they sold a lot of different albums from him.
It seemed like, every few months, they would have come out on TV with some of these specials that you could only order on the TV ad, by calling in and ordering.
I think it was Time Magazine, or one of those big magazines like that, that also used to put out big album sets of music, usually by some choir or other, like Legends of Country Music, or Songs of the Old West, or some such name as that. They would be a five-record set, and you had to pay for them by so much a month, because they were expensive.
I remember buying one set of old cowboy songs that way.
I am glad that now I can just download the songs I want to listen to, but I did enjoy having all those wonderful old records back then.

Thanks, Rainee, that was fun listening to him again. Roger Whittaker. He did sell mostly on TV. He had a nice voice too.
i remember the magazine ads and a long time ago, I sent for a bunch of country tunes on 78 rpm records. Wore out a lot of needles playing these.

The mag. I get now, Reminisce, has an ad for the popular songs of WW2. Hills of Dover, etc.

I bought a Boxcar Willie album from an Op Shop about 20 years ago for an uncle who loved those old songs and had mentioned some of Boxcar's oldies. It was in mint condition and he loved it. He was like a kid again listening to that record.:)

I went to Boxcar Willie's show in Branson many years ago. He had a great show. He was in a movie too but I can't recall the name of it.I have a picture somewhere of me and Boxcar Willie.
