Renaissance Fair: Yay or Nay?

Never had a chance. Far as I know, there have never been any near the places that I have lived.
Each one I have been to are set up in an area that have permanent wooden sheds and landscaping of a village of the era. Along with an arena with bleachers to watch the jousting events. Don't think a pop up fair would have the same feel. Open air cook stations for roasting turkey legs and chicken and beer huts of course. Outdoor stages for the entertainment. The big one near me lasts 4 weeks long with a different theme for each week (Lords/Ladies, Vikings, Pirates, etc.) The people working it or visitors in costume tend to get in the persona of their costume. I find them great fun. I go in costume myself now.

We attended a BIG one outside Kansas City one year. It was a permanent site, though only used during the summer, so it had pretty impressive buildings.

It was a lot of fun with lots of activities, food, things to buy, roving characters. There was jousting, singing, dancing, and elephant rides

Every week, people could get married there for free. Quite a few came in costume.

I also attended a smaller one here in Florida that was a lot of fun, too.

The closest I have been to a Renaissance Fair is a show put on in downtown Toronto called
Mid evil times. It’s a live show which includes horses and it emphasizes the mid evil times.

I went to one in Chicago and the couple that was with us, the male yelled at our long haired Knight to cut his hair as he went by.(Not funny) As they do the circle ride of the arena the Knight got his horse into a canter then as he approached our ring side table, he cut the horse to turn sharply away from us which in turn spew dirt all over our meal. Did I laugh, yep and gave my portion to our friend and said, you're buying a meal after we leave for that. He had it coming for that...good Knight

What a horrible experience. Did you get your free meal after all that.?

At the one near Kansas City, a very...um...buxom...wench...in an extremely low-cut bodice came up to the Spousal Equivalent and asked, "DOST THOU WANT TO SEE MY TITMOUSE?" Without waiting for an answer, she thrust her abundant assets up to his face so that he could see she had a pet mouse nestled in between her...um...damsel dumplings.

All I can say is that it was the highlight of HIS visit and I still ask that question occasionally and I don't even have a mouse.

They've had big three day one (Fri., Sat & Sun.) here that they call the 'Medieval Fair' in a big city park across town every spring for as long as I can remember....doesn't really appeal to me plus with me disliking crowds there's way too many people that attend for me to feel comfortable so I've never been.
