Repeat Nightmares?

I don't go deep into dream analysis. But some of it makes sense. My most common bad dream...my two estranged girls have taken everything including my clothes. Last night two cats who bought the farm years ago. How to wake yourself from horror like walls exploding into fire?

I've had some lucid dreams in the past, where in the dream I knew it was only a dream. Some were awesome where I was flying over beautiful country, controlling every turn, speed, height, etc. Some were nightmares where someone (or something) was very close behind me, coming after me to do harm, maybe trying to get through a door of a room I was hiding in. In some of those I've been able to acknowledge that I'm just dreaming, and nothing bad will happen. I usually have the will to wake up and get out of it. Luckily the bad dreams don't happen too often though.

Think about it Fur, once you accept that you might be able to get out of a dream like that, you may surprise yourself.

I rarely have nightmares, but I do have repeating dreams. There's one where I'm going down a flight of stairs and realize I can just skim the tops of them, kind of like sliding over them. I'm always so happy about that because I can move so quickly. The staircases in these dreams are usually different each time and in the dream I realize I'm dreaming, but also think, "Hey, I can really do this, awake or asleep." Isn't that weird? I've had that dream since I was a kid. I don't have it that often, but it's always the same except for the staircases. Has anyone else had a dream like that?

I had one for years in which I needed to call for an ambulance (this was before you could just call 911).

I would dial "0", get the operator and tell her I needed an ambulance and she would say, "the number is _______, you'll need to dial that number." I'd try to dial and couldn't remember the number. So I'd call back and beg her to connect me, but she'd keep saying, "the number is _______, you'll need to dial that number." I'd wake up from the nightmare in a panic.

Then one day my next door neighbor's little granddaughter came running over and said that grandpa was on the floor and wouldn't get up. I ran over to the house; he had had a heart attack. I grabbed the phone, dialed "0" and told the operator I needed an ambulance. "Yes, ma'am", she said and connected me IMMEDIATELY with the emergency services.

I never had that nightmare again. I guess I just needed to be reassured that I would get help immediately if I called the operator.

I'd have to say my most common current nightmare is trying to run and not being able to. In my dreams, I cannot bend my knees and must run straight-legged. Sloooowly. Wonder what that means?

I used to have nightmares which would disrupt my nights and turned me into an insomniac. I took care of the problems by putting a dreamcatcher above our beds and the beds of our munchkins.

The dreams nowadays are much better and some turned out to be prophetic, a plus, definitely.

I've had (not for many years now, and I'm so glad) recurring dreams about plane crashes. Sometimes I was actually on the plane and sometimes I was just watching it happen. As for "waking yourself" from them like you mentioned... I have never been able to do that, but my daughter often does. If she's having a bad dream, she actually tells herself in the dream something like "okay, this isn't real, it's a bad dream and it's time to wake up now." Sure wish I could do that... but I really don't dream very often any longer.

Some bad dreams may result from trauma or other unresolved issues. I had “flashback” dreams for quite a while after being in a car accident years ago. I’ve read some experts counsel that you can “engineer” yourself out of a bad dream by challenging the circumstances you encounter within it. For example, if dreaming that you’re being chased by a monster, turn it around by chasing the monster instead! 😴💤
