Djeneta, right, a Roma refugee who has been bedridden and unresponsive for two and a half years, and her sister, Ibadeta, for more than six months, in Horndal, Sweden, March 2, 2017
It is called Resignation Syndrome which has been occurring in Sweden for the a few years and is part of the refugee population. They are dealing with a condition that has only been observed in children and adolescents between the ages of seven and nineteen. There is a rapid onset of an extreme level of apathy, immobility and mutism for no apparent biological reason. First there is a decrease in habitual behaviour patterns and a reduction in activity and motivation which slowly becomes worse. Many of these children remain in a catatonic state, sometimes even going into a coma-like state for months or years, unable to get up or feed themselves.
