It's one thing to say screw it I do not care about no stinking laws or rules. But when you are caught red handed at least say you don't care. But instead people are playing the victim card for their very own actions & negligence. Know a dufuss who had a rental car stolen without rental or comprehensive insurance. So of course the rental company wants him to pay for the car. But rather than figure out how he will pay(has a job, house and some money) he's complaining "they shouldn't be allowed to do that to people, how can they expect people to pay that much money"-he actually said this. I told him it will probably wind up being a payment plan. Then he asks how can they force him to pay. I told him he probably would be sued. Then he says no company in their right mind would sue me for a 25K car. He doesn't understand companies have staff lawyers and some motions are relatively cheap to file. I also tried to explain they could sue for court costs which he wanted no part of. Then I told him see a lawyer and not surprisingly he hadn't contacted one. He also complained the rental company didn't lose any money because he thinks they already had the vehicle insured so he shouldn't have to pay. Then I asked did they recover the car yet-"I don't know"-weeks later with a 20K+$ bill staring him down he hadn't checked with the police?
Setting aside the legal fine print when you lose somebody else's 25,000 dollar piece of property(negligently I might add leaving the keys in the car) don't play the victim, fess up, deal with it, better yet deal with it honestly-if you don't want to pay then don't pay but don't turn this into a professional victim's story filled with excuses or twisted logic..
