Retail Store Policies On Returned Items

I saw on the news yesterday the cost of items returned is 59% of the sales price. Some major retailers are considering not bothering with returns in the future. Asked how they avoid people abusing such a policy the person responded the stores will track persons and if they suspect fraud thy cut that person off.

It probably makes sense for goods under a certain dollar amount.

Years ago we had a family-owned department store that would accept returned goods from any store in exchange for store credit of the original retail price. It was a popular program that helped build the customer base.

Three or four times a year they would have a sidewalk sale and sell the returns at discount prices. They probably still made a little money for their trouble when you consider the markups on most merchandise.
