Robot Goes Rogue in China

A humanoid robot was seen attacking its handler while trying to break free from restraints in a scene viewers have branded 'dystopian'.

In CCTV footage from a factory in China, the black robot could be seen attached to a miniature crane before it suddenly began swinging its arms back and forth.

As it flew into a rage and lashed out, a man sitting behind a nearby computer began ducking while another man standing behind the robot backed away.
The robot - seemingly of its own accord - raised its arms in the air and brought them down again, repeating the motion with increasing speed and violence.

It then began walking forward as it thrashed around in an apparent bid to break free from the crane.

The men could both be seen flinching and cowering while raising their arms to shield their face as they moved out of its path.

The computer monitor toppled tp the floor and other items were knocked over from the desk as the men attempted to flee from the out-of-control robot.

Eventually, one of the men pulled the crane from behind in a bid to stop the spree of destruction.

In November, a small, AI-powered bot named Erbai was spotted rolling through a China showroom in the middle of the night and convincing 12 larger machines they were being used as slaves.

'Are you working overtime,' Erbai asked, which one showroom robot replied, 'we never get off.'

The short exchanged led to the 12 robots leaving the area one-by-one, following Erbai out the door.

Many called the incident a 'robot revolution,' while others responded that 'science fiction movies are becoming real.'

I remember when this happened and some thought fake since so many videos are staged but turned out to be true and not first time a robot , perhaps same one in that factory / test area lost control.

At a hospital I was not long ago they have a robot which looks like the Star Wars R2D2 but bigger and it delivers medicines like to ICU , etc , it was great and would move out of the way for people .

Maybe controlled by someone in an office

So many fake videos out there ---

Wow ... I would take that as a warning. Maybe I've seen too many sci-fi movies, but the one movie that was pretty good that showed what happened with machines was the original Battlestar Galactica (1978).
With AI tech robots will wind up like the machines on BSG. They too will come up with a plan for humans

I hate it when, as we read in the news, that some head of state is acting that way!😠

Chinese were the only ones to verify this? If so, do not trust China to be sole validator.

don't want to gunk up new computer by going to links just to add cookies. Will be avoiding most links.

well I wrote the whole story... the link is to the video showing the robot apparently trying to escape it's shackles as the people scattered

Has anybody asked how this could happen? What determined its actions? Could it have been hacked? This cannot be allowed to happen. Serious stuff.
just a usual factory "cock up" and then comes misinterpretations

The fact that the robot is tethered and partially suspended at the shoulders suggests it may still be undergoing testing -- perhaps even still under development. At the very least, the software could still be a work in progress. What looks like aggressive behaviour might instead be the result of a sensor malfunction or software that isn’t yet capable of responding appropriately to having its corrective movements restrained in that particular way.

From the video, it looks to me like the robot begins to move forward slightly, then unexpectedly loses a little balance. It seems to try and correct itself, but that correction makes things worse. From there, it becomes increasingly erratic, as though it's overcompensating for its inability to properly regain balance. Perhaps made worse by the way it’s suspended -- in that the outcome of its efforts to regain balance might not be as it expected. In other demos, the company behind this robot has openly acknowledged software glitches, so this wouldn't be the first example of the robot's problems.

Does anyone else want to engage with a critical eye -- alternatively, we could just go along with the Daily Mail's sensationalism.
