Rolex watch......service it ?......sell it ?......or just let it sit as is ?

While working in Indonesia back in about 1980 or so I waltzed in the Rolex Center in Singapore and bought mama and I both a brand new gold & silver, date just, with Jubliee band, his and hers Rolex watches.......mine has sat in the safe deposit box, in a blue Crown Royal bag, for at least twenty five years but mama keeps hers here in the house and wears it occasionally when she gets all dolled up and wants to 'put on the dog'.

Yesterday morning I dropped off a shoe of mama's to be fixed and three doors down was a jewelry store that carried Rolex's and having nothing to do I waddled my big derriere in to have a look around......new Rolex's like mine are running about $6300.00 or so and the jeweler estimated that back in 1980 mine was probably going for around $2200.00 or thereabouts.

The jeweler said that mine probably needs to be sent to Dallas to be serviced because the synthetic oil Rolex uses can / may have hardened in the past twenty four years.....I sent mama's to the Rolex Center in Dallas for routine service back in 2004 and the bill was $395.00 plus Certified Mail both ways, the cost for the same routine service today is $800.00

Now that I've retired and won't have a tendency to bang it up while wearing it mama has been hounding me to get the watch out the deposit box and wear it but I may have only worn a watch one or two times since retiring 4-2015 and unless I pushed myself to do so I may not wear the Rolex even if it was sitting here at home.

The jeweler did say that used and depending on condition, mine could probably easily fetch close to what I paid for it back in 1980.

Sooooo with no heirs, do I spend the bucks to have it serviced and wear it ?......sell it ?......or just continue to let it sit and let the State of Okla. worry about what to do with it once mama and I have both kicked the bucket ?

If owned one I would give it away to one of my family who wanted it. I like my watches to be radio controlled so I know the time to the second.

We have an old Rolex, self winding, that used to be my husband's father's watch. He picked it up somewhere when he was a Merchant Marine, it seems to still work but we never had it appraised, not even sure it's not a knock-off. My husband was in no hurry to try and sell it, says maybe he'll wear it someday, so now it just sits in the safe awaiting its fate. :) If I were you Ike, I'd just get a couple of offers and sell it to the highest bidder, I would have a problem with spending money to have it serviced, but that's just me.

If you can see the serial number you might be able to find out about the specific watch. This site others can assist with the research.

Some Rolex watches can be quite valuable. Locate the model and serial numbers and do some online research to get the current value. If you have no desire to use it, and no one to give it to, you might as well sell it and enjoy the money you might get for it. Once you know the details of the watch, check the Sold listings on EBAY to see what people are actually getting for a similar watch, and that will give you a good idea of what you can sell it for. Some old Rolex watches can bring a price well into 6 figures.

Before I could get out the door and headed to the bank to get the Rolex mama called me from work and said that she'd still rather that I keep it and have a nice watch and for me to not do anything till we discussed it again this evening.....she said that if we both decided to have it serviced and keep it that she would make damn sure that I started wearing it. :)

I found the receipt in the safe deposit box and thirty seven years ago (1980 to 2017 is not 24 like I first stated :)) I paid $1760.00 U.S. for the watch and this morning with the jeweler not knowing what I originally paid he offered me $2000.00 for it.

I sort of want to sell it but then again I think it's kinda sweet that mama wants her main man to have at least one thing that could be called 'Bling' :).......we'll toss it around again this evening and see.

Sell it and enjoy the windfall. Otherwise, what good is it? Serves no purpose. Have fun!

I absolutely agree, sell it before someone else beats you to it!!!

Sell it...
While digging some rocks, my daughter found a Rolex....Local jewler have her $1000 cash...12 years ago!!

Ultimately the decision will be mine but it looks like I may be losing the battle on selling.

So mama gets home yesterday and after her bath she's in the kitchen fixing supper and I'm milling around with her stealing little bites of this and that while we chat.

She's still pretty much in favor of me keeping the watch......she's saying that ever since we've been together (almost 41 years) that when extra money was available I've always gotten her nice / sorta expensive things but never anything for myself except for the Rolex, which I suppose is true but I just have never looked at it that way.

To further benefit her above argument guess what happens while we're standing it the kitchen ?......the doorbell rings and UPS shows up with that Dooney & Burke purse that I ordered for her last Friday. :(

Then she gets kinda serious and says that the matching watches have history for us and that it would be like selling off a piece of our life together.

So at least for now it looks like I'll be keeping the watch.

Thanks Bea, we looked ours up and it's a Perpetual Oyster model 1603 from 1969. Searched around a bit and looks like they're selling for $2,600-$3,000, but not the exact look or condition. We may take it to a nearby jeweler someday and see what they say it's worth and what they would offer. No rush though, that will be up to my husband to decide, since it was his Dad's. Very informative website there, saved it in my favorites.

I'm glad it helped, it's always good to have a little information before you approach a potential buyer.

True. Before you do anything be absolutely sure of the value. It could be worth far more.

I also bought my Rolex in Singapore down on Orchard Road, which at that time was Singapore's main shopping district back in the early 90's. At that time, the exchange rate was $1.70 Singapore dollars to $1.00 U.S.

1 ditto.gif...Note that the jeweler will buy it only to try and make a profit for himself.

By holding out, doing my homework and doing a little local internet advertising I was able to sell my thirty six year old Rolex locally for $3100.00 last Friday, which is $1100.00 more than what the jeweler offered me......I was pleased with the deal and so was the buyer.

My old Citizen work watch still keeps good time but to be honest it's pretty beat up and battle scared so Saturday I went to J.C. Penny's and bought this watch ----> http://www.citizenwatch.com/eco-drive/watches/watch-detail?model=AW0050-82E on sale for $140.06 including tax......being a big ol' boy the larger size watch suits me and I really like the big and easy to read numbers.

I can't recall wearing a watch since I retired April 2015 but I figured it would be nice to have a decent looking watch to wear just in case I did.

I got a Bass Fishing Boat for my wife...I think it was a good trade..001.gif

It doesn't need "service". I'd hang onto it and let it go up in value. We all have cell phones with the exact time so watches are relegated to being jewelry.
