Royal Family Motorcycle Escort Cop Smashes into 80 year old woman - lady critical

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after she was struck by a police motorbike escorting Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, in west London.

At around 3.21pm today, the motorcycle collided with the woman at the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in Earl's Court.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance rushed to the scene and a woman, aged in her 80s, has been taken to hospital.

She remains there in a critical condition.

The great-grandmother hit by a police motorcycle escorting Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh has died two weeks after the horror crash on London's A4.

The motorbike collided with Helen Holland, 81, from Birchanger, Essex, at around 3.21pm at the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in Earl's Court, in west London, on May 10.

Police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began an independent probe after investigators attended the scene alongside emergency services, when the woman was taken to hospital, where she remained in critical condition for two weeks.

Her family told the BBC: 'She fought for her life for nearly two weeks... but irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle today.'

Her son Martin Holland said his mother had died after 'suffering multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries' while using the 'safe route' by crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing next to traffic lights.

An eyewitness said Ms Holland was 'thrown 40 feet across the road' after being struck by a motorbike.

Family members described Ms Holland, who was in London visiting her sister at the time of the crash, as a 'beautiful, loving, kind and caring lady who would always put anyone before herself', in a statement shared with Sky News after the crash.

Ms Holland's family were said at the time to be 'deeply saddened and shocked' by the news she had been so seriously injured in the collision.

They stated at the time: 'Helen may be 81 years old but she is sprightly for her age and nothing stopped her living life to the full, spending precious time with her family, muddy walks with the dogs and lunches with friends is what she enjoyed most.'

Ms Holland, a mother-of-four, grandmother-of-ten and great-grandmother of even, was also described as a 'well-respected and popular' member of the community.

Her family added: 'The outpouring of love and support the family have received from those that know her is hugely appreciated.

I don't think it matters that a motorcycle rider was escorting anybody, he ran into, and killed a woman. I noticed the news article said she was killed by a "motorcycle", not a motorcyclist. And I may have missed it, but I didn't see his name anywhere. I think a jury should determine his fate.

..but of course they won't because he's a police outrider .. he'll be found to be not culpable as they always are

The last picture makes me think that she stepped off the curb and into the path of the motorcyclist "outrider". This "outrider" I'm assuming is required to ride in a kind of "formation" as an escort, and it was required that he be that close to the curb.

I used to ride, and when I saw several bikers riding side by side, I cringed. Doing so, you have no place to swerve with another rider next to you if an unforeseen obstacle is in your path. The motorcyclist was literally between a rock and a hard place.

From the above photo, it appears the woman was at a crosswalk just stepping onto the road. Now I know people in England drive on the wrong side of the road, well OK the left side. But the direction that woman was thrown clear across the road, makes me think the motorcycle was driving on the far right side of the road even along the curb. Maybe this is typical in a motorcade, where the celebrity is supposed to be protected on all sides by police.

Now like American's who don't look to the right when stepping onto a road in England, it's possible that this English woman didn't look to the left when she stepped onto the road. Of course this doesn't intend to exonerate any vehicle operator. It is their responsibility to be watching for unthinking children, blind people, dogs, and old ladies while operating a vehicle.

None the less, this is a sad story, and I feel for the family. This should not have happened.

Apparently ..as you can see she was crossing at the crossing... but a big black screen had been placed around the electricty box, so as to ( as usual).. prevent Royalty and the world from having their eyes offended during the coronation..

and because it jutted out further than the crossing she had to cagily step forward to see if there was any cars coming.. and was struck instantly.

One person described the problems with visibility caused by the screens as 'an accident waiting to happen'.

Her family say the police have neither commented or apologised..

I'm afraid liability needs looking at. Was she crossing safely and sensibly, was the motorcycle going too fast or carelessly? The way police and ambulances speed past pedestrian and drivers is quite often is scary. They have a job to do but must be answerable in law.

Sympathies and condolences are all very well but an old woman has died in a terrible way.
