About a year ago, Russia banned American produced pork products, due to the heavy use of growth stimulants that US pigs are fed to make them grow faster and leaner. Most of the other countries have also banned the use of these chemicals to be fed to pigs raised elsewhere, so America is one of the few places who still does this with their pigs.
Now, Russia has gone a step further, and has banned any pigs from the US to be imported into Russia.
For the last 5-6 months, we have had an epidemic of a virus that attacked pigs and kills them, and they have not found any way to stop the virus. Pig farmers have been selling out their pigs in hopes of selling them before they sicken and die; so even though this is causing a good supply of pork on the market at present, once the extra has been sold off, there is going to be a serious shortage of pork.
If they don't find a way to stop the epidemic, then we may literally not have pork in stores for a long time.

My take on this, is that it is already risky to be eating this pork, since no one knows what is causing the disease, or what pigs have been sold that were already exposed to the virus.

Remember the mad cow epidemic? It just came and went,we'll be OK.
Actually, the mad cow epidemic did not go away, it was simply swept under the rug by the FDA. This disease is like AIDS, in that it can take years to show up in the animal (or human) that has contracted it. Most cattle are only raised for a year or two, at most; so when they are sent to market, they still test clean for mad cow.
It is only the older dairy cattle that are kept for many years before being sold as beef that it would show up in, and most of those will go to dog food processing plants since the beef is old and too tough to use for anything except maybe hamburger and gelatin. Dairy cows don't have much meat, so they are not worth even butchering usually.
Mad cow has actually spread into the wild animals, and has been found in deer, elk, and other similar animals.
In humans, it is called by a different name (jacobs-crutchfield or something like that--- have to look it up), and it affects memory (think Alzheimers maybe ??).
So, it is still there, we just don't hear about it much anymore. Can't have the populace stop buying their beef and dairy products, for heaven's sake ! !

Here is an article that explains about the mad cow epidemic:

Until pigs/cattle/poultry are stopped being fed growth hormones, out breaks of some disease or another will occur. Don't eat them.
