Salmonella in cut melons sickens 60 people

Guess I lucked out, I buy a small bowl of cut fruit each week from Publix, but not in the recall.

It's something new every month, chicken, eggs, romaine.......

Precut/prepared fruits and vegetable salads, etc., are Always at a higher risk for contamination. Far better to buy a whole melon, or head of lettuce, etc., and prepare it yourself.

Whole lettuce won't guarantee against salmonella. Remember romaine?

Bacteria can invade just about anything growing outside like lettuce if the soil is contaminated and it doesn't take much.

I'm lax in eating lettuce. I think if you wash it in vinegar you might be able to counteract the bacteria.
