San Francisco's mayor has declared a state of emergency as the coronavirus continues to spread

"San Francisco's proximity to China and the volume of travel between the two areas" ??
I know my geography isn't great, but I never knew that San Francisco was close to China.
My daughter is due to go there (S.F) in April to speak at an international conference, and she'll be really pissed off if it's cancelled.

Of course, San Francisco is in close proximity to China in these days of air travel! So are most places. The threat of a global pandemic is real in this case. The East coast is in close proximity to Europe where COVID 19 is spreading like wildfire. Our Canadian authorities are also preparing because the threat is real. We are being advised to stock up with at least a week's supply of necessities and to stay home if we aren't feeling well. Most major sporting events and other large venues are being canceled.

Just found this headline: "Korean Air flight attendant with coronavirus reportedly serviced 400-seat aircraft that flew between South Korea and US twice"

This is a two fisted attack on the world. One the health factor and two the economic factor. No chance of a vaccine for at least 12-18 months. Can you imagine the economic damage of an 18 month downhill slide in the global markets? 18 months of a virus expanding all over the world with no medicine?

There are lots of visitors from other countries to all of our major cities....All of which have a high potential to bring this illness to the US. The bad thing about this illness is that a person can be carrying it, and not know about it, until the symptoms appear....which could be days/weeks. Presently, there are any number of illnesses killing far more people....flu, cancer, etc., but the longer this drags on without a diagnosis and cure, the more likely we, and the rest of the world, will see a drastic rise in problems.

Errr... this must be a different Europe to the one I know. True, there is a serious problem in one part of Italy and there wave been a small number of cases is some other countries.
Is this what you mean by "spreading like wildfire"?

I also assume that by "close proximity" you mean that there is a regular traffic between the two and the fact that they are about 4000 miles apart is irrelevant.

San Francisco has done nothing to discourage the homeless population. If anything, they encourage it. The large homeless population lives, and pees, and poops, and sneezes on the streets., pretty much unmolested. And now the mayor is worried that the virus will spread? No small irony there.
