San Fransisco In An Auto Burglary/Break-In Epidemic

San Francisco is going through an epidemic of auto burglaries/break ins or smash & grabs. The number has doubled in less than a decade with some blaming the reduction of many non violent felonies to misdemeanors. Over 26,500 in 2015, only 10,300 in 2011. More auto burglaries per capita than any other US city. It's gotten so bad an FBI Agent a gun stolen from their car. Police only making arrests in 2% of cases.

Car burglaries are a problem is virtually every city...especially in the older sections, where few houses have a real garage, and most people park on the street. Leaving anything of value in the car, and/or failing to lock the doors, is a sure invitation to the thieves. If San Francisco is able to solve 2% of these thefts, they are doing as well, or better, than most city police departments.

I remember when car cassette players, then CD players became a hot item. Then air bags. But yes leaving anything looking like it will have value in certain neighborhoods is temptation to thieves and junkies. As one can see there has been a doubling of these car burglaries in 5 years. It's not just the stolen items it's the repairs to car after and possible deductibles & insurance increases that hurt as well. And how is a smash and grab not a felony. Smashing or forcing one's way into a car that is not theirs is clearly an act of aggression and disregard for personal property. That is an aggressive act based on force.

I always wonder when people are going to learn to not leave anything of value in their cars! I THINK I finally have my daughter`s cured of leaving their purses on the front seat (grrrrr) but I am truly amazed at how "dumb" people can be. My middle daughter`s BFF had her window smashed and wallet stolen off her front seat just last week. She said "Why the heck did they do that? There was nothing in it?" Actually, her entire purse was on the front seat but they only grabbed the wallet out of it. She figures that because it was bright pink, the guy didn`t want to be seen carrying the purse. She was lucky because she did have money and valuables in the purse. Still had to cancel all her credit cards though.

Sad commentary when one can't even leave some lose change in a compartment designed for lose change. In urban environments though the junkies in particular roam looking for ways to get that next hit. They walk the streets like a predator looking for pray ie the money and valuables in cars. They pass enough cars that the odds will favor them finding a target for their criminal attack.

I put valuables on the floor or dark places in the car. I've found old dark color vitamin bottles work great for lose change. Take the label off and store it in a compartment it's tough to see at a glance.
