School tax bill and car insurance invoice received today

way upstate in New York, USA
Up $47 from last year. Also no in-person payments accepted. All payments must be mailed in. I wonder why they discontinued in-person payments? It was so convenient to just stop at town hall and drop it off. That way I know they received it and I'd get a cancelled receipt right back.

Also received my car insurance invoice - up $85 from last year.

I want a receipt for my property tax payments. You could use certified mail, so you would get a signed receipt when they got the payment, but these days I think that costs around $10.00. If I had to mail the payment by regular mail, I guess I'd be sure to mail it well before the deadline, so I could monitor when the check cleared my account.

I do too. I mean, I pay everything online or by the automated phone system. But my tax office charges a percentage of the tax bill to pay by phone or online, which can run into a lot. However, they do still accept in person payments for no extra charge, so I drive over there and pay it that way, since it's only once a year.

I am sure they will send a receipt.
 
My question is why taxpayers now have to mail their payment when we used to be able to stop at the local bank or town hall to make a remittance. I looked at the town web page and it said for all inquiries about the school taxes should be directed to the school's budget and finance department. I couldn't find anything relating to that on there.

I would assume that it’s a simple cost cutting move.

It does away with all of the chit chat and grumbling with each taxpayer and allows a clerk to process multiple tax payments at a convenient time and place.
