They were around at the beginning ot the 20th century through the late 30s here in the states.

I started school in 1938 and after the 1st grade, they were completely gone from my school.

They really were slate, the little pencil thing was
also a piece of slate, but rounded for little fingers
to hold it.
We only had a notebook to write the correct things
in, all the writing practice and sums etc., were first
written on the slate, if it was correct the teacher told
you to write in your book.

I believe my father left school at 14 which would be 1940...just around the same time they disappeared from classrooms, at least in the USA .
My mother otoh didn't start school until 1941 and she never used slates...
