Screened Shelter Enclosure for Balcony Style Deck

Last weekend we sat on a deck which had a metal frame attached with screened in fabric which made an enclosure for added privacy. It’s like a screened balcony gazebo. It was furnished with bamboo furniture.

Have any of you seen these or have anything like this?

I really like them and would like to get one for our balcony deck at the back to add shelter and more privacy.

I've seen them. What I don't know is how well they hold up in bad weather. I'm in Chicago area and something like that has to take a huge snow load, handle T-storms, and handle high winds. You're up in Canada --- pretty much the same bad weather probably happens by you too. I guess you have to research as well as possible.

I just love the first type, but I never thought about snow. Maybe you have to take it down in winter? That would be a pain!

That right RaddishRose. The fabric part gets taken down in winter leaving just the frame standing which then can be decorated with Christmas lights so it’s a win win for me.

We considered this at first but friends who had this type said the fabric didn't hold up well and removing and storing it for the winter was a pain. Also when using the fabric closed in the summer it would blow if there was a breeze which is annoying, so it had to be anchored somehow. We went for a simple wooden screened in deck and the roof is shingled like out house and attached. I just wish we had made it bigger and in the middle of the summer we can't use it because it is on the sunny side of the house and even though the roof shades it 90 degrees is to hot for me.

Ruth, what a shame about your screened deck. Have you tried a couple of fans?

Yes,we have tried fans but all they do is blow the hot air around. We do use it a lot in the spring and fall so it wasn't a total waste and now it is big enough for just the two of us. We don't have company like we use to. I use it in other ways though. I have a wash line out there that is on hooks that I can take down in a hurry if needed. Comes in handy for cooling food items for the freezer in the winter and for holidays I've put my pies out there to cool. The grill is on there also so in the dead of winter I throw some hamburgers on and watch them from inside the porch door which has a window, and make a mad dash out once in awhile to flip them.

Keesha, here is a link one at Home Depot so you can read the customer reviews and questions with answers.

That’s really nice and I’ve seen ones like this on someone’s deck. We have a Home Depot, Rona, Lowe’s, Canadian Tire, Costco, and another dozen others I will check out. It has to fit on our wooden deck so ideal dimensions are needed.
I don’t mind taking it down every winter. Currently our deck is far too hot in the summer. The wood itself heats up to the point of being to hot on the dogs paws . By the time it’s cool enough to use its then somewhat buggy. Plus the sun heats up the back wall which makes the house too house. This would help cool it down until we get our air conditioner going.

We have quite a few of these. I had to know what they were called before I started looking them up.
It’s an attractive way of adding some nice outdoor living space. Later I’ll get the bamboo furniture.
We have a glass table and chairs but rarely ever use it. A little chair or love seat would be more practical.

At least that’s what I’m going with right now. Lol

It sounds like you get a lot of use out of yours. Ideally a wooden structured one would be nicer and then wouldn’t have to be taken down. Now you really have me thinking. I could make one to match my greenhouse. Sweet! Lots of things to consider.
Thanks Ruth and RaddishRose.
