Second Day of Work and I Can Do This

Basically it's a restaurant wholesale outlet, branches nationwide and maybe more. That means instead of a supermarket cart of stuff they come up with cases. Something else remarkable is at Home Depot in a really busy hour you might ring up $350 in all sales. This place and the average per customer total is $300-$1500.

Then someone called me into the office to fill out the union dues application. Of course she would have no idea why that made me so very happy, but I walked out of that office...

I have never had a job with a union. All the places I worked for were either privately owned or big corporate. A small organization and it's kind of Mom and Pop, no benefits and if they like you they keep you. Big corporate unless you're management or executive hires "At will". A very bad thing, in other words they color it to say " Oh you can quit any time you wish without reason".

That also means oh yaaay "We can also fire you at any time without reason". With a union if they have it going on, you have a definite pay scale, definite required hours, definite benefits, and they can't fire you on a whim. If the union is good your job is more protected than some other retail places. My old job could reduce your hours to eight a week...

I hope it's a good union. That is good news!
 
I was in a union for most of my working years. Well worth paying the dues, equal/better pay, fair treatment and they can't just fire people for no good reason. Sick leave and vacations benefits are usually better too.
 
My dad was in the Roofers Union. It put food in my belly while I was growing up.. without it, it's doubtful my parents could have provided as much for me as they did. My son is now in the Postal Workers union..and gets good benefits and job security. Sure hope that we can keep unions around for a long time and they are not disbanded. Union membership has declined drastically in the last 30 years.. Not a good thing for the middle class..
 
Good news, Fur! I was only in a union once and we got good pay raises.
