Secret Passages

I remember my dad telling us a story about the time he thought he had discovered a secret passage in his grandmothers house when he was a child.
He found a door in the back of the house that opened up to a set of stairs. He said it took all his courage to creep up the dark stairway, while occasionally looking back over his shoulder to make sure the door was still open. He finally reached the top of the stairs and slowly opened the door, only to be disappointed that it only lead to the second floor landing at the back of the house.

I believe he wanted us to enjoy some of that same wonder. When we were children he finished the basement and one of the doors had a bumper sticker that said "The Caverns" he told us he found a passage that let to caves. Of course when we went to explore it, the only thing we found was the water heater and furnace. He was a fun loving practical joker to say the least.

Our house is a collection of different parts, built at different times over about 140 years. So we have a few of those.

My favorite is a small door in an upstairs closet in the oldest part of the house. It leads to an attic crawl space over an old shed someone attached to the house as a bedroom about 100 years ago, at the far end of the attic is a small door I put in when we added the newest part of the house about 5 years ago.

We also have a 4 inch conduit that connects the basement in the old part of the house to the basement under my office/mancave, a separate building built about 70 years ago. Kids like talking to each other through it, one unconnected basement to another.
