I remember when the beginning of having to fill up your own car with gas began. All I heard was "NO WAY!! I'm not gonna do THAT!" And, unfortunately, I was one of them. The revolt lasted all of 24 hours.....
NOW it's self serve checkout counters. NO WAY I WILL DO THAT!. This time I mean it. I despise the machines who, I swear, sneer at you as you gaze at them, trying to figure out how to use them. Just the other day Sue and I were shopping at our local Loblaws store. As there were large lines at the checkout counters......That's another one of my beefs. Long lineups which I will "pontificate" about at another time....Sue suggested we try the self serve checkout system.
"Really, " I say, "You know how I feel about these bloody things! Besides they are there primarily to take jobs away from real people. AND they look too compilcated."
"C'mon" says Sue, "Let's give it a shot. What could go wrong?"
So, we start to scan our groceries. Getting instructions from a tiny screen....Get one item through and second item machine doesn't recognize the item. Try again. Charges us twice....
So, call over woman who is, apparently, the self checkout babysitter.....
"There seems to be a problem," I inform the lady, "The machine has charged us twice for same item."
She looks at small screen, shakes her head and informs us we scanned the item twice....I tell HER that the machine, Which I am sure was spawned in computer hell, told us that the second item was not recognized and to scan the item again.....She shakes her head yet again.
"Are you absolutely sure?" she asks. "I mean, these machines rarely ever make a mistake."
I look at Sue who has been observing this conversation and she picks up on this "rarely " comment.....
Sue speaks....." Well, I believe the machine just made one of those RARE mistakes. Do you think you can fix this for us so we can finish up and get out of here?" Sue is usually forgiving......Even toward machines.....I was taken aback.....
The lady looks at Sue and goes away to talk to a supervisor....As THEY confer, we pack up our groceries into the shopping cart and go line up....So much for modern technology....
