Self Driving Cars Now Becoming a Reality

When I first read about Google starting to develop self driving cars a few years ago I thought that it would be a long way off until they actually hit the streets. Well, in the Phoenix area that time has come http://www.azcentral.com/story/mone...-cars-arizona-now-truly-driverless/837721001/ Back in February I participated in a test drive but there were two people up front and one other in the back asking me questions as we went through the streets of Chandler. Now, Waymo is offering rides to people without any driver. I know many are hesitant about this but I embrace it. The only hesitation I would have is at this point are the other drivers who might be distracted seeing a driver less car out on the road.

I think it will take years, perhaps an entire generation, when the time comes that the majority vehicles on the road will be driver less. Many in our age range will still want to drive their own vehicles and I understand that. But the youngsters are already using services such as Uber now so might not have the inclination to own and maintain their own vehicle as they get older. For now I think it will just be a new type of taxi service and will be faded in very slowly. But what do I know ? I didn't think this would become reality until at least 2020 and I was obviously wrong on that :)

The transition to self driving cars will most probably happen within the next few decades. Once that transition is complete, the number of auto accidents should plummet....however, During the transition auto wrecks might actually increase as the technology is perfected, and drivers of conventional cars try to interact with the driverless vehicles.

This is just one of the many technological advances that seem destined to make humans and human activities obsolete. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are assuming more and more activities that used to be solely a human realms. That, coupled with ever soaring populations makes me wonder just what the future holds for humanity.

I hate using "because I am old" as a reason to not try new technology, but I am not really sure I would feel safe in a self driving car.

I can't wait for self driving vehicles.

I worry a little about the transition period but once everyone is riding in the passenger seat it will be fine. Someday we will probably need to call for roadside assistance to send a skilled driver to come and manually drive the vehicle to the garage when the system malfunctions!
