the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning. There are a number of branches and subbranches of semantics, including formal semantics, which studies the logical aspects of meaning, such as sense, reference, implication, and logical form, lexical semantics, which studies word meanings and word relations, and conceptual semantics, which studies the cognitive structure of meaning.
I have always been fasinated by the use of words. one of my fav is the phrase 'you cant go faster than light' but therein lies the semantic word faster.. fast or derivatives faster or fastest...there are certain rules that need to be followed in the use of words....you may not be able to go faster than something but you can go faster than the something can go...see??light obeys rules of physics whereas you would not have to.. you cannot go faster that a car,,,but applying the rules you can go faster than a car can go because the car must stay on the roadway whilst you do not have to...again the use of the particular word.....
