The 80 year-old was told by the scammer that he had to pay money or his nephew would be sent to jail. The scammer then sent an innocent woman Uber driver to the older man's address to pick up, "a package." He blamed her somehow and ended up shooting her. What a terrible shame.

US man, 81, charged with murdering Uber driver after both targeted in scam

This happened not far from where I live but I read it on the BBC site.

An example of Don't Mess With Seniors
I'm sorry - no it's not.

It's another example of a glocal scam network targeting Seniors. You should listen to the AARP podcast "The Perfect Scam". It will make your blood boil and your eyes weep, but at least it will also educate you about how prevalent and sinister these scams are and why you should NEVER talk to anyone who calls or emails or texts you about your family or finances.

NEVER.

If someone calls you about those two topics, HANG UP and call the family member in question or your bank. If they say some government agency wants to collect money from you OR ELSE, HANG UP and call the government agency.

What a tragedy - both the old man and the Uber driver were being used and abused by the scammer.

I watched a YouTube video on this that came up in my feed. The poor woman.

The man should have called the police. He was not acting rational. The scammers should get murder and elder abuse charges. And the old man shot an innocent woman. Murder charges for him also.

This is a terribly tragic case. Another example of someone who thought because he had a gun, he could meet out his own justice! And it's a perfect example of why some people do not need to be armed. He took an innocent life and ruined his life, the lives of her family and his own family. I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison. Any other sentence would mean justice is not served, which I'm sure would cause her family additional heartache and frustration.

@Remy I have already experienced being ignored because I'm an older woman. We don't know anything about this man. Maybe he'd already been ignored for 10 or 20 years so he was very entrenched in believing he had to handle everything alone?

I was just thinking about my former landlord today - completely 100% evil people. They ignored me 100%. That little city where I once lived - when I reached out to them for help with the evil landlord, they also ignored me. All I can do is say, "Well, I will never live there again even if they give me free housing."

I'd rather pay for housing in a place that gives a **** about Seniors.

That's one thing I have noticed already about getting older - once you're over 55, you become irrelevant. So, we don't know what this man had already lived through in life, or how terrified he was, or anything. I'm not saying he's innocent. I'm just saying he was a TOOL, nothing but a tool to the scammers.

Likewise I have had some very evil employers who treated me like **** because I was an older person. May they all be blessed with timely karma.

There is MUCH I do not like about current America. I don't care what the politicians say in their speeches about what America is. Look at how American treats its poorest and most vulnerable and that will tell you what American really is.
