Sh-boom sh-boom

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
In 1954, I was 15. I didn't have a driver's license yet but my neighbor Vernon who was 16 did. He asked me if I wanted to ride along to his Granddad's cabin in Crestline and spend the night. He needed to check on something. Crestline was about 80 miles away in the San Bernardino mountains. To my surprise, my folks said it was OK. So, off we went in his Granddad's Olds 88. Three things stick in my mind about that trip. One was the dinner he fixed us, ground beef mixed with pork and beans. Second was a drink he made called a grasshopper, creme de menthe and milk. And third was Sh-boom on the car radio. All three were new to me. Granddad's cabin was really nice.

I was thinking about this and looked up Sh-boom on Google. It's amazing what's out there. YouTube had several versions and a Wikipedia article had complete details of who wrote it and everyone who recorded it. I thought the song was kind of silly, and still do. But, it's probably the first doo wop song I ever heard.
